I wonder if they are among the people who believe that dinosaurs and humans lived at the same time.

Janelle has just put a comment up to that effect on the YouTube vlog. Someone questioned why they aren't teaching their children about scientific facts and she countered that with some twaddle about the bible being correct (that it only took 6 days for the earth to be created) and dinosaurs are therefore only being a few thousand years old. Creationism rears its head big time in that vlog judging by some of the comments. I get so disturbed whenever I read things like that. Fair enough if they want to believe it, but why indoctrinate their kids in that way too? It sounds like the Duggars all over again.

Ha, I commented and she left a long reply. You can probably pick my comment out pretty easy.

How are these homeschooled kids ever supposed to have a chance of going to college\university in any sort of STEM field if their parents are teaching them the world is actually 6000 years old and that dinosaurs lived at the same time as people. One of the big ideas behind home schooling is how it doesn't limit children. These kids are going to be limited.

Edit: Wow. Just went to read her reply. Now I'm not surprised why someone who's an actual EMT would also believe a meme about the dangers of what's lurking in breakfast cereal.

Many people of faith can believe in science and their religion at the same time. Most also don't think the Bible should be taken literally but there you are.

About Art having autism: They did a video a while a go where they all took one of those online Asperger's tests, and John and Art tested positive, Janelle said they wouldn't care if John had it or not, that it would just be apart of who he is. But, they wont seek out services for kids with autism, and those may benefit him a lot. This is strange considering Art's nephew has lower functioning autism, so they must be educated about it, right? I mean, I can't diagnose, but I would be surprised if John(and Art) didn't have autism.

I remember that blog and the fact tat they got quite a bit of criticism in the comments section for it too. That was the first time I thought badly of them because they started deleting a few comments and I thought that they were above that sort of thing.

I would be surprised if Mary didn't have it too. She has issues with putting clothes on etc. Why won't they make use of services if their kids have autism? I don't understand that. Surely they would want to give their kids any help they could to function?

Helping their children lead functional lives when they're adults doesn't seem to be a big concern to them. Don't believe facts they don't line up with our young earth beliefs.

Unfortunately many parents who think they are being accepting of their child with a disability but then that child has to try and navigate services as an adult. It's easy now that John is in a very controlled environment. Will John be able to thrive\cope when he's out in the work place? Wouldn't it make sense, if it's needed to help him learn coping skills before then. Not all their kids can find someone just as odd as them and be self employed and avoid humans as much as possible to survive.

What really annoys me about Janelle is the way she treats herself differently to her children and husband. In the latest vlog she once again has her "special" chocolate treat that no one else is allowed to eat. She snatches a chocolate bar away very quickly from one of the kids and says it is hers. In one vlog Art mentioned their chocolate purchase for Jangle's use when they were shopping and she gave him a dirty look and told him not to mention that. They have both mentioned how Janelle has her own special stash of chocolate for when she feels she needs it. I have also noticed that she will sometimes make herself a special chocolate dessert (mud cake in a mug) and none of the kids are allowed to have it. She has actually sat there and eaten it in front of them while they beg for a taste. Once someone sent her some chocolate and the kids were drooling over it, but she quickly took it from them and said that it would be go into the pantry for her special treat when she needed chocolate. I don't know how a mother can treat her kids like that. I do understand that they don't want them to eat junk, but why does she get to have it in front of them?

I feel really sorry for those kids. Sometimes when they are showing the food that they are having for a meal the amount they serve up is appalling. I've noticed several times that there will be only one strawberry each, or one slice of fruit, or similar. I don't see a lot of fruit being given to those kids at all. I used to think that their diet was very good, but now I realise that it is too heavily based on cheap meat and homemade bread. Yes they do have some lovely fresh vegetables from their garden, but there is a distinct lack of fruit in their diet and I suspect they don't get a lot of milk either.

They did have to address in the past talk that they should feel their kids better food not just what she could get as cheap as possible. I think even one of her family members was in the comments.

If you want to eat special chocolate eat it after the kids are in bed.

On many occasions I've heard Peter in the background begging for food. I know they aren't starving, but with the parents being so weird about food, I think some of them are going to grow up to have food issues.

It is appalling! I don't know how on earth they keep things looking so untidy in their home ... especially the third floor. After so much of an effort decluttering they still manage to have a house that is so full of rubbish. I don't know how they stand living there.

I agree. They said when they take off school it can for several WEEKS at a time too!! huh? No way are those kids getting a proper education. Janelle seems to just plonk the older two somewhere in a corner with their books and they works through them by themselves, the younger kids are plonked in front of a computer or are told to be busy doing colouring in, so in reality she only seems to work with Peter and occasionally Lydia. Not good enough. Education has my profession for 40 years and I cringe every time they talk about it because I know just how superficial their "schooling" really is. It seems to be something that they do when there is a lull in their other activities and they have nothing else to focus on for a while.

I'm sure that they are reading here. I certainly hope so, because some of what we are saying might actually change the way they do a few things and that only can be good for their kids.

Unfortunately this is how it is with many home school families. I know families where about every 18 months mom is pregnant so "school gets put on a back burner" for her pregnancy and recovery. So basically they lose a year of homeschool every other year but the moms will be like but but we watch documentaries and read books. Oh we got too busy today "magic school bus totally counts as science class". When the kids get older and they can't make them study then the claim to homeschool is to avoid truancy laws.

Academic based home school co op groups do exist to help parents keep up with core subjects. The bigger kids would probably benefit from that. I have a funny feeling Charity largely homeschools herself.

I'm sure that Charity and John both really homeschool themselves. They sit there all day with no socialisation, no friends, no one to talk except their little siblings or their parents. It is sad. No wonder Charity looks so depressed all of the time. She either sits with her school books by herself, cooks, or knits and occasionally sits at the ambulance station. the highlights of her days are following her mother around the grocery shops picking up bargains. What kinds of life is that for a fourteen year old girl?

I really wanted to like this family because they're so unlike any other youtube family, but I just dislike them even more with each video.

Have we ever seen Charity with any friends or anyone her age? It seems like she's always stuck with toddlers or with old women. I know from experience that creating friendships is very hard when you're homeschooled without co-ops.

I liked them a lot for ages, but Jangle's constant "look at me, aren't I wonderful" approach finally got to me and I really find her hard to take now. I also find it hard to watch those kids not being treated properly.
