Bonnie and Joel: Spreading all the HERPES Part 8

Unread post by alym0326 »

I think everyone's blowing my post about it out of proportion... I didn't judge Bonnie for using it, I don't think she's a bad Mom. Frankly, I have ZERO problem with the place settings she uses for her children. It was just a comment because I have a different personal experience and it occurred to me because my 4 year old sister in law is just starting to use them and only has to use plastic when it's something messy. My post wasn't throwing judgement at Bonnie at all... was just a comment that even stated that it's probably nitpicky

Also I don't think anyone suggested the kids have to use adult place settings, again it was just a comment that seems to have been blown waaaaay out of proportion...

Alright can we all move on from discussing silverware of both the plastic and well.... non plastic variety- and all get along so that everyone can read about my dramatic skull fracture senario then all hit "thank" in response to my incredibly insightful post!!! Image Image

I had no idea people might judge something like this! My kids are happy and well adjusted. I guess I'm more likely to judge a kid that seems stifled with an overly serious parent than one that lets their kids have fun and use bright and colourful utensils. Healthy food isn't always fun, so the least I can do is let them eat their boring adult food with colourful utensils :D
I think it's odd because Bonnie seems to make them use those kids plates and cutlery. I see no problem if that's what kids choose. My son is three and also gets to choose, and prefers the big cutlery. My kid isn't stifled at all he always gets to choose his cup, spoon and plate. He always chooses the adult version. I make him use kid pastes because he could break my adult plates.

Based off this post and some posts I've seen from you in other threads you sure do seem to think your kids set the rules. Who said she was making them use them? Maybe they chose to use them? Is that a wrong choice just because it's different from what works for your kids? Jeezus.

What makes you say she's making them though? We haven't seen that at all. She gives them a plate and they use it. I think you're reading too much into it.

I wasn't suggesting that you are stifling you child at all! What I simply meant though, was that I have a friend that's very similar to Ellie, whereas everything visible needs to be perfect and fancy. I can't go have a cup of coffee at her house without my Starbucks being poured into a tea cup. I hate going over with my children because their house is cold, pretentious and unwelcoming. That's what I mean by stifling. I don't judge a home that is lived in and where the kids use colourful plates, spoons, etc. In all honesty, I probably wouldn't notice. In a stuffy and cold home though, I would definitely notice a child using a fancy cup, silverware, white dinner plate and a linen napkin.
But doesn't Ellie use the same plates for her kids as Bonnie does? I'm pretty sure they both have those little divided kiddie plates.

I could appreciate going to look for Valentines and the constant changing of kids's minds with their picks. After a while, it can be frustrating. They also alluded to cabin fever which is real and it is noticeable siblings not getting along being indoors this much. On another topic, just thinking about Jackson who they said they were watching, I hope they send Boston to a "real" preschool next year before kindergarten. He is home a lot, especially in the winter and it will help him to know the basics starting off in school.

I'm glad she mentioned expectation vs reality, and realized that it was her fault for having manifested those expectations in the first place. I definitely know I'm guilty of this and get frustrated/disappointed.

One of the first indications that our son had anxiety was that simple things like picking out a toy became long, drawn out processes that usually ended in tears for no apparent reason. I know it must have been frustrating that Cody and Olivia kept changing their minds, but at least they seemed to be able to choose without too much drana Image

That was one of the clues that my son had Asperger's. He couldn't choose, because he would get overwhelmed thinking of the ramifications of every choice, even simple choices like which treat he was getting at the grocery store. I can see how anxiety causes the same kind of drama. Sometimes it would get so hard to be patient, and trying to rush him would only make it worse. One of those things you learn to work around.

My son has Aspbergers as well. For a while (before he was diagnosed) when l saw him melt over choices l tried helping by flipping coins, rock paper scissors, etc. He'd have massive meltdowns over which ever way the results went. He'd tell me the game was putting too much pressure on him. I had never seen anyone cry over rock paper scissors before. It definitely takes patience to parent an Aspbergers child.
