Their kitchen is really small. A typical 60's style rambler. I've seen some remodels where they take out that wall between the kitchen/living room and there is really no room for a master bathroom or their only choice some make is to build up. Of all the vloggers, you could see if they moved or built, it would be easy to see why. However, I really like their house and yard.staceyeileen wrote:Yep. Back when they were doing the remodel, some of us thought they should be looking at new houses instead of putting the money into a remodel due to major things like the lack of a master bathroom and the lack of room in the eat-in kitchen. Given Bonnie's comment in today's vlog, I wonder if she is re-thinking that decision.PostyMcPosterston wrote:Today's vlog made me realize... I had no idea they didn't have a master bathroom! Is that small bathroom they're always in brushing the kids' hair and teeth their only upstairs bathroom?!!

Re: Bonnie and Joel: Not Every Day Is A Rational Day (Part 9
I think it is personal preference with vacation. Disneyland wouldn't be my first choice either, but we did it with the kids. Hawaii wouldn't be a month long destination for myself, but a couple of weeks was very nice. I could say that about any place we've visited. For myself, I like to see a site and move on. There are very few places I look to return to with the fact there are so many places I wish to see.menehune wrote:I side-eye some of the things Bonnie does, and think the trip is probably going to be a little long for them given that they have never been away this long, but I'm really surprised by the level of criticism this board seems to have over Hawaii as a travel destination. People travel to Oahu all the time with kids and do just fine. People are acting as though it's a really random place and not one of the top travel designations in the world! If it isn't your choice then fine, but that doesn't mean it isn't for many others. Not everyone needs (or wants) to do Disneyland.

Were they all sitting on top of the tables too? I wonder how many days it will take before they are?nc_mom wrote:Those children are not taught basic manners. You don't let them climb over all the furniture in a hotel or vacation home. The place they are staying at is being rented to them and owned by someone else. The least they could do is respect other's property. The kids should never be left alone out on the balcony as it is a tragedy waiting to happen. They don't seem to have an ounce of common sense between them.
Re: Bonnie and Joel: Not Every Day Is A Rational Day (Part 9
Bonnie wants what she wants when she wants it and she wants it right now!!! Hence, taking two school age kids out of school for a month. She doesn't give a rip. And Joel does whatever Bonnie says, period.
I do think it's good to get out of the Utah bubble and expand their horizons, see more of the world, etc.
I'm SO happy their rental doesn't have a pool. . .disaster waiting to happen. But the balconies? I shudder to think what could happen.
Joel quits working. . .check. Elaborate vacations. . . check. Next up? A youtube-style McMansion. Oh yes, it's going to happen. Maybe they'll build it in Hawaii?

Could it be Carl and Jinger visiting? why did the kids talk about inviting them to dinner?

I think they can do a month in Hawaii without the kids getting bored. I hope they do excursions in the morning. Have Boston and Lincoln nap in the early afternoon while Cody and Olivia do school work. The. In the afternoon take them to the beach or a hike. Dinner maybe more school work and bed. I am a school teacher and even on summer breaks I did school work with my kids and that is how we did it. I did not take my kids out of school for vacations, but I did not have that opportunity so I do not know what I would have done if I did have an opportunity to go to Hawaii for a month.

In the same thread just pages apart there is side-eye for Bonnie not moving and instead having remodelled her kitchen (a good investment if they do sell in my opinion), but then if she does eventually move (or build) she's selling out like other You Tubers. While I do question the timing, I don't actually think they are on an elaborate vacation. It's definitely a long vacation, and a beautiful spot, but I don't see how they are spending that much more than an average family of that size would over 1 or 2 weeks. Having a condo they can buy groceries and make meals to save on restaurant costs. They avoid an expensive hotel tax by not staying at a hotel. This is how my family travels, and I guess I never really saw it as elaborate by any means. We don't travel often, so when we do it's for at least two weeks. For longer vacations, this is definitely the way to do it. Like someone else said, it's often cheaper to do longer, and if you don't have to factor in lost wages for time off, this is even more true.

Just doing a quick search for round-trip airfare for 4 kids under 12 and 2 adults from SLC to Honolulu the cost is just about $8000. That's airfare alone, add in the cost of the rental for a month, food, admissions to whatever they're going to do, etc. Are they renting a car to get around? It all adds up to a pretty hefty price tag for an 'average' family to spend on a vacation IMO. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for them they get to go and experience such a beautiful place, but I don' think the average family is taking vacations such as this.
This is what happens when 'youtubers' get big and successful; it seems like the average person can no longer relate because it's just not what they are doing in their own lives. We liked B and J when she was a SAHM and Joel worked hard to support the family. They struggled and were tired just like us. Once the big money rolled in, jobs are quit and they can check out of the every day grind of life and go to an island for a month. . . well, I for one just don't have that much in common with Bonnie anymore. IMO.

Don't plan to watch the vlogs, are they not sponsored?
So they actually went just because Bonnie had a whim?
It's like when you are a child and eat something good and you want to eat only that thing.

I'm pretty sure that this is the place they are renting. Based on the house tour video it has been updated, but the floor plan is the same.

Lol. You can absolutely fly to Honolulu for under $8k. I do it every year to see family! Bonnie probably paid no more than $2500 for the tickets. With a good sale she could have paid a lot less.Peridot wrote:Nuna wrote:In the same thread just pages apart there is side-eye for Bonnie not moving and instead having remodelled her kitchen (a good investment if they do sell in my opinion), but then if she does eventually move (or build) she's selling out like other You Tubers. I agree with the previous poster, this isn't exactly an elaborate vacation. I mean, not in the way that it's something only You Tubers can afford. I know many people that holiday to the island, and if you stay at one of the bigger resorts (which friends often do) you pay $600+ a night. Alcohol is expensive, so between food and alcohol, one week at a resort is likely to be about as expensive as the month B&J are so far set up to have. Some people value travel and save up for a yearly tropical vacation, while others put that money into a fancier home, an RV, or new vehicles. It's a matter of taste, or where you are in your life. To those starting out, Hawaii is likely to be a dream still as setting up a home, marriage or family takes precedence. If you're at the point in your life where you start to travel though, Hawaii is often one of the more common destinations. Bonnie and Joel could have easily taken off to Hawaii for 2 weeks and stayed at a fancy hotel together, but instead they chose to have this experience together as a family. I'm sorry, but that is different from a lot of the other You Tubers.

The one I found (on an AirBnB style website) had the same artwork and everything. I don't want to add the link because they are still there, but obviously if people look hard enough they can find it.
Re: Bonnie and Joel: Not Every Day Is A Rational Day (Part 9
Looks like it's $143 a night according to VRBO. So for a month that's $4290, plus airfare of $8000 is heading up to $13,000. . .cost of a car basically, but spent in one month. I know for a fact the family I grew up in and the family I raised never took a $13,000+ vacation. So, IMO, that's an elaborate vacation that the average family could not do budget wise. I don't mean youtube elaborate, I mean average family with kids under 12 elaborate.kait98 wrote:I'm pretty sure that this is the place they are renting. As far as airfare, did you scope it out? I did cheapest round trip from SLC to Honolulu for 4 kids under 12 and 2 adults and came up with over $7000 airfare. Plus, I don't think the tickets were bought that far in advance.
I do think a much more elaborate trip for just B and J is coming up. Why else would they get passports?

I don't think the vacation is elaborate because I do the resort version every year. Not a month long, but the price works out about the same for less time I'm a lot farther North than UT, but our family of 4 can fly for $2000.
In all honesty one week at Disneyland (or DW) would have probably cost them probably half what they are paying for that month in HI.

I'm with you on that. Maybe because I had a bad experience in school growing up and learned more from travelling to Asia and Europe and road trips across the US. Reading, language, social skills, geography, etc. They're quite young, the kids are young. Life is too short to pass up an opportunity to go on a trip like that, especially with your husband and kids. Yes they're travelling on a sponsorship or definitely on the income they made off youtube. We'd all go on a nice vacation if we had that money. My husband and I havent been on a vacation since we had kids. They're too young to remember memories but people often forget that parents have lives too, we have hopes and dreams and why not enjoy it with our kids? They're SO young that their teachers would have said something if it was really messing with their education. I did do homework if I was pulled out from school for a family vacation. My parents were very strict. no activities until work was done. Same with summertime. My dad got us math and grammar books to work on during the summer not to forget it in time for school. I agree with many here that one month is a bit too much. I get homesick about 3 weeks into a holiday. Sorry this post end up being longer than expected.nutbagmcgee wrote:I may be the only one who's OK with them going on vacation. I would if I had the money. Her kids are little, they will catch up easily. They aren't missing any state testing (doesn't start until 3rd grade.) I side eye Bonnie for a lot of shit, a vacation where they took the entire family, didn't leave kids behind, didn't take a "friend" aka- babysitter, are appreciative of what they can now do with the money, doesn't bother me much. Now is a good time to travel, the weather is nice and tourist aren't out in full force yet.
