Bonnie and Joel: This Old House - Part 6
Re: Bonnie and Joel: This Old House - Part 6
The thing I don't like about the fireplace is that the hearth, brick, and top on the shelves are all different patterns that don't quite match. they'd be pretty on their own or just with one of the others but not all three mixed together, plus the short mantle.
I really love the color of the hardwood with the color of the walls but the silver accents do make it seem cold. Hopefully she warms it up with decorations (although the downstairs is still barren).

Someone asked on one of her vlogs once if Julie was pregnant, Bonnie replied "it is rude to ask if someone is pregnant" so yep I think she would be unimpressed tootratra58 wrote:Yep, no one likes to have others ask if you're pregnant when there not. I know Ellie is bony but she looked extremely bony in that clip.anxietyqueen wrote:I take it back ...I'm just not a fan of the new finished fireplace at all. Also, I cringed as soon as I saw Ellie's boney arm pop into the camera frame. Thank God it was only for 30 seconds.anxietyqueen wrote:Also, I liked the taller bookshelves in the living room better than the short, and I loooooved the white brick fireplace. I was sad to see both of those go, though I'm sure it'll still look great when it's all done.

I agree, I don't like the mantle on the fireplace or that huge clock. The mantle should definitely wrap around the corners and end in the wall. But the mirrors would be eady enough to switch out for some shelves if they wanted to sell at some point.

I don't care for the mirror by the steps, I can see myself falling down the stairs because I was looking in the mirror.
How cute was Joel in the vlog today, I love that he dressed the boys to match himself!

I like the cabinets but hate the mirrors, she should have continued with the bookshelves.

She had to take the bookshelves down because she doesn't have any books! Maybe I'm weird but my husband and I have a full bookshelf in each room downstairs.

I don't hate what they did with the living room remodel but I don't love it either. When they started tearing the living room down as well I was pretty shocked as I thought it looked very nice as it was. I don't understand why they changed the things they did. I feel like painting the walls and the new floor would have been plenty and would have looked just as nice as the remodel if not better. I feel like they wasted money on that because it didn't really make such a huge difference. What really changed the look of in my opinion was the paint color and new floor.Kryptonite wrote:I had to put the photos side by side to see what I disliked about the new remodel. I adore the colors, however, I think the mirrors and cabinets make it look too sterile!
It reminds me of a hair salon or bathroom cabinet. To me, it's less cozy living room/ home-like. If the shelves were back and the mantle was the same length as the fireplace, I'd think it is perfect.
(This was the best SS I could gather.)
The kitchen looks pretty nice though. It was a huge improvement.
Re: Bonnie and Joel: This Old House - Part 6
I really don't like the clock they picked for over the fireplace, it feels so ten/fifteen years ago to me, they had picked such nice things for the kitchen. The mirrors match the clock too much it makes them look cheaper. I like they wanted consistency between the kitchen and the cabinets each side of the fireplace but they are too similar. They just look like kitchen cabinets when they should look a bit more like they are in a living room. The marble is gorgeous and I love the wall where the stairs are. It's such a shame they couldn't have gotten rid of the wall where the fridge was, a lovely island there would have really opened up the space and given them so much more workable space. They made it look as best they could though with that wall there. I like how Bonnie's house actually has colour in it, like Lincoln's room is a lovely bright yellow, their entire living space a calming blue. So much better than the cream or white or grey everyone else has.

I have tons of books too, not a ton I'd be wanting to display in the living room though. Too many eharlequin romance novels, their uh... spicier stuff, and RL Stine and Christopher Pike books. lol But I'd love to have tall bookshelves to put in a mix of books and decor.winniewise wrote:She had to take the bookshelves down because she doesn't have any books! It's weird you mention Bonnie not having any books because I've noticed that E&J don't seem to really have any either, or their parents. Then again my dad & step-mom don't display books in their home, but I know my dad has a ton of them and my step-mom probably just made him hide them because she wears the pants and what she says goes.
I think the red clock they had would have fit well with the redone living room. And I agree with what someone else said. That new paint and flooring would have been enough to make the room look redone.

Re: Bonnie and Joel: This Old House - Part 6
I think that the cabinets next to the fireplace are nice, it would look better with some shelves above them than the mirrors. That's an easy fix though, Joel could easily add some shelves at some point if they change their mind. Hopefully when they finish furnishing the living room it will look a little else sterile and more warm. I love her kitchen though, I think they've done a really good job in such a tiny space. I can't wait to see what dining table they choose.

I'm waiting for the dining table as well. I hated her old glass one so I am really looking forward to something different. Seems a bit odd she hasn't mentioned anything about the table yet (unless I missed something) but that would be the first thing I wanted back in the house!! It's got to be hard having no table for 6 people to sit. It will definitely be interesting so see what they end up with.

The new look is very sleek and moderm, which is fine, but it doesn't fit the house or the family's personality. They'd be better off with something less sterile and more homey.

Longtime lurker, first time poster...
Does anyone think that Joel could be going back to college?
Do we know if he went to college? I know he served a mission but I don't remember anyone mentioning him going to college.
The thing that made me think of it was in E&Js vlog, when all of the girls were out to dinner Ellie mentioned them talking about "schooling." Very well could've been the kids going back to school but it was just something that clicked.
Bonnie mentioned Joel was off to "bigger and better things" right when colleges are going back to school... If this is something Joel has wanted this could be the right time since they could live off YouTube income in the meantime...

That is the first suggestion that actually sounds true. I don't know if Joel went to college before but I don't remember them mentioning it. Whatever he's doing I really hope that it works out for their family.procrass562 wrote:Longtime lurker, first time poster...

Re: Bonnie and Joel: This Old House - Part 6
This is a great suggestion! As far as I can remember, Joel went on his mission pretty soon after they graduated high school and they got married right when he got back (within a couple of months). And I don't think he ever got the chance to go to college.procrass562 wrote:Longtime lurker, first time poster...

Re: Bonnie and Joel: This Old House - Part 6
I firmly believe that if Joel has quit his job he has a plan for the future. I just can't see him being happy to be a full time youtuber. Whether he's starting a business, going back to school or taking up a new trade.. I do believe he's working on something. P

I agree this is not a contemporary style home since it was built my guess decades earlier. I do like their basement.RootBeerFloatie wrote:The new look is very sleek and moderm, which is fine, but it doesn't fit the house or the family's personality. I think it would be a great opportunity for Joel to further his education or start a new career. I get the impression he didn't attend college.procrass562 wrote:Longtime lurker, first time poster...

I would love it if Joel was going back to school.
I would love it even more if Bonnie had the chance to get a better education, but of course that is asking way too much.
