Bonnie and Joel: This Old House - Part 6
Re: Bonnie and Joel: This Old House - Part 6
She posted a before and after on Instagram of her kitchen. I don't understand why she took out the dishwasher, I wouldn't have the patience to hand wash all those dishes every day lol
Re: Bonnie and Joel: This Old House - Part 6
I thought she never had a dishwasher to begin with...that is just crazy not to replace it. If they ever sale, people will notice this. The farm sink took up space and it is beautiful. There is just so much you could do with this space and I wonder if they opened up that whole room (family/kitchen) if things couldn't have been done differently.Sarai wrote:She posted a before and after on Instagram of her kitchen. I mentioned this on Ellie and Jared's thread, but I think the Griffith's have something against dishwashers, which I do not understand. I feel like dishwashers get your dishes cleaner than the do by handwashing, and obviously it's easier. Ellie has sheepishly admitted to using her dishwasher as if it's something to be ashamed of, and she's also mentioned that Jennifer does all her dishes by hand. I get that there is some stuff you can't put in, but for silverware, plates and cups WHY are they so against dishwashers? Makes NO sense.tratra58 wrote:I thought she never had a dishwasher to begin with...that is just crazy not to replace it. If they ever sale, people will notice this. Re: Bonnie and Joel: This Old House - Part 6
There's a lot I'd give up for a dishwasher... It's baffling to me. From the age of 10 until I went away to college, it was one of my chores to clean up after dinner every night for our family of 5. We moved a lot, and usually our houses didn't have dishwashers, but when they did I was SO grateful. I guess maybe we had more extensive meals than Bonnie likes to prepare in the evening, with lots of dirty dishes as a result, but it was a lot of work! Having a dishwasher has always been a priority for me as an adult. I can't imagine not having - or wanting - one with four kids! I guess if she really doesn't want it, then more power to her, but that seems like martyrdom for its own sake. I really hope Olivia isn't destined to become her "dishwasher" like Shari and Chad are Ruby's.
I didn't really think about that when watching the vlog though. I enjoyed it. Those aren't the choices I would necessarily have made in a remodel, but she and Joel love it, and that's the point. She's such a good housekeeper, too.
I laughed at Joel's phone. Those who got irritated at Cullen, Jared, and Bryan ordering the new iPhone will find it refreshing.

Re: Bonnie and Joel: This Old House - Part 6
I think it's an anti-clutter, control issue thing re: the dishwasher.
The dishwasher might be an eyesore to someone who dislikes clutter. The machines were also were energy hogs back in
Jennifer's day. Not to mention, all of the caustic, environmentally non-friendly chemicals people push through their dishwashers.
Growing up, my Dad made us hand wash the dishes before we put them in the dishwasher. To this day, I do the same because I've never used a dishwasher that I felt got my dishes really clean. I use it mostly as a drying rack or for when I want to run things through the high heat, sanitation cycle. I feel badly about using most dishwashing detergents as well.
If you've seen any of the old home videos of the Griffiths, the great majority show Ruby and Bonnie in the kitchen with dish towels. I think Jennifer used chores to control the girls. Why buy a dishwasher when you have slave-daughters? The woman has had that same gaudy carpet in her house for years. Maybe hand washing is a habit and buying a dishwasher seems like a splurge to her?

I've always had a dishwasher, I've never used it because it never gets my dishes as clean as it does when I hand wash. If I could I would get my husband to take our dishwasher out and have more storage because I have a smaller kitchen like Bonnie, I understand why she didn't want one if it was because of storage issues.

Re: Bonnie and Joel: This Old House - Part 6
Guess I'm the opposite, I feel like hand washing can never get dishes as clean as a nice wash through a dishwasher can. We've always used one in my family though. The water in my apartment now doesn't get super hot, I don't think it's adequate to clean or sanitize things. I'd send out the microwave before a dishwasher! If they do continue to make it big on YouTube and ever want to move, I think it will subtract from the house.
P.s. I think the chairs are awful lol but I'm glad she likes them.

Re: Bonnie and Joel: This Old House - Part 6
Dishwasher kills germs since the temperatures get to 145 degrees. I would get the long heat/washing sanitizing cycle in some dishwashers that kills almost all germs. Hand washing it is difficult to get to these temperatures without burning your hands. Yet, there are germs everywhere and we survive. The one issue I have is raw meats that sat on a plate, I like to throw them in the dishwasher. I think I use less rags and towels since I just rinse them off with a sprayer and put them in the dishwasher and of course the dishwasher drys them too.
Perhaps Ruby could do a homeschool experiment to show if it is best to wash dishes by hand or dishwasher with looking at bacteria results with both of these methods.

Bonnie and Joel: This Old House - Part 6
A house can sell without a dishwasher. I know, I bought one. It's a minor issue, and you can retrofit a dishwasher. If anyone wants to buy the house and considers that a minus, it MAY give them a thousand or two less, but nowhere near what it would have cost to knock out that wall and make the kitchen bigger. As someone else with a small kitchen, I see the position Bonnie was in with dishwasher vs cupboard space. I think people forget not everyone has a dishwasher. Using a dishwasher or wash dishes by hand.... Neither one makes you a better person or parent.
People are forgetting that B&J fixed the house up for them. I'm glad they made it what they wanted and what would work best for their family. It would have been annoying to see them throw a ton of money and focus into the house reno process and then sell. It would have appeared as though they were being dishonest the whole time, and selling out.
I feel like Bonnie is almost too relatable for some people. It makes her boring and people want to nitpick her more normal life. I find it interesting that a lot of the harsher critics are people just starting out in life. Not everyone will be able to build a luxury home when they finish school and get married. It's not realistic.

Re: Bonnie and Joel: This Old House - Part 6
But would it leave "emotional scars"? The only thing I can think of that Bonnie was likely to have done that would leave emotional scars would be hormone driven "I hate you!" during puberty. I said that to my mom, but she knew enough not to take it seriously. Maybe Jennifer took it to heart? My mom's reaction was "I don't like you very much now either" or the one that really works: "That's too bad. Because I _love_ you!"LydiaE wrote:Well, she and Joel have both mentioned that they frequently skipped school when they were dating. The new dishwashers are beautiful with the stainless and you don't even have the controls on the front of them anymore. They really clean the dishes as well as pots and pans well, have gotten more energy efficient and quieter. The noise use to bother me more than anything, but today's dishwashers run pretty quiet.LydiaE wrote:I think it's an anti-clutter, control issue thing re: the dishwasher.

HS, I don't think with this particular issue it's nitpicking. People are just discussing it. You have to admit the Griffiths have a weird reaction to dishwashers. Ellie acting as if it's somehow shameful to have used hers, and the whole "Mom always washed her dishes by hand" bit goes back to the idea that the way Jennifer did things when they were growing up was the best/only way. Honestly, I think if she had used a washboard and tub for laundry, the girls would be doing that too.

Bonnie and Joel: This Old House - Part 6
I think Ellie's sheepishness comes from her having acted like she wasn't using it for so long, and then finally admitting it after Jared repeatedly praised her earlier in the week for "having done the dishes." They were giving the impression that she was working so hard, which was unnecessary because it was normal housework. I just don't agree that not having a dishwasher is somehow a weird Griffiths issue.lmmomSD wrote:HS, I don't think with this particular issue it's nitpicking. People are just discussing it. I actually think they did spend a lot of money on the renovations with kitchens being pretty pricy. I especially like what they did in their basement which gained them a lot of space. It really comes down to what you prefer with appliances and I don't see the parenting issue with it. Bonnie is very grounded in life and I hope she doesn't get a bit envious (only human) with Ellie's new kitchen which will be triple the size and it is what it is. For myself, I possibly would since I do think Ellie's house is very nice with the many upgrades they've done and it looks like a large center island which is so nice to have too.HelloSweetie wrote:A house can sell without a dishwasher. She certainly has super clean house with four kids...impressive. The remodel is very nice with my favorite being her kitchen countertop.

Re: Bonnie and Joel: This Old House - Part 6
Eh, our dishwasher broke years ago and we never replaced it lol, I prefer washing by hand and always say it builds my immune system up, if we need to sanitize then I will either use the stove or the microwave. I don't see anything wrong with using one either, we also don't have a large family so maybe that is why I don't mind washing by hand.
I love the before/after, I prefer the way the living room had the bookshelf on the side of the fireplace and I don't care for the furniture but Bonnie seems to love it so I am happy for her, the kitchen seems so much bigger now, it's amazing how those changes seemed to make it bigger and I hope they do put roman shades over the window/door, I would hate to have it open all the time. (I did chuckle when she says she walks around in the buff)

Re: Bonnie and Joel: This Old House - Part 6
I don't have a problem with Bonnie not putting in a dishwasher, she's obviously done the reno for herself and not for selling the house (I get that a house can sell w/out one, but I'm sorry it would be weird to go into a house with a kitchen that has been totally renovated into a modern style without one. They are the norm, like them or not). But I have to disagree that the no dishwasher thing isn't a weird Griffiths thing -- I totally think it is. I think they all think washing dishes by hand makes them a hard worker or something. It's not really that much less work to put dishes in a dishwasher than to put wash/dry/put them away by hand. You still have to rinse, stack, handwash things that aren't dishwasher safe, etc. But I think Jennifer thinks it's "cheating" and has instilled that in her daughters. Of course, that's just me reading between the lines. Ellie seemed so ashamed of her dishwasher usage, I felt like it had to be more than just the fact that Jared thought she did them by hand. I know this is Bonnie's thread but now I'm wondering if the Mecham estate will have a dishwasher....HelloSweetie wrote:I think Ellie's sheepishness comes from her having acted like she wasn't using it for so long, and then finally admitting it after Jared repeatedly praised her earlier in the week for "having done the dishes." I like the remodels but it feels so white! Cabinets are white, counter is white, backsplash and grout are white, fireplace is white... I feel like they could've done something a little different with the backsplash and put up art instead of 2 mirrors!

This is Jennifer we are taking about... Her parents probably are hardcore guilt-trippers and/or self-martyr(ers).lmmomSD wrote:But would it leave "emotional scars"? Skipping school would stress out and worry any parent because of the repercussions of poor school performance. It also demonstrates questionable morals (lying and evading), lack of responsibility, and rebellion. With two younger kids, I doubt Jennifer wanted to deal with Bonnie's rebellion and resented her for it.
Since they are super religious, they probably assumed she and Joel were being sexually active with all that time alone, and they probably were to some extent at least. I can see them claiming her loss of virtue was emotionally scarring to them.

Bonnie's house looks beautiful now, it looks so much more open and brighter and they've done a good job in a small space. A lot of her decorations and furniture isn't my personal style but I think it looks really nice. I would of added a dishwasher for sure, I hate washing dishes. But that's all personal preference.
