PopTheButterfly wrote:I'm just now caught up to the 35 min vlog and holy cow you can tell Cullen has an art for editting. I've made videos for YouTube before (two that required a lot of work because it was for a grade). Editting is a freaking pain in the butt and for a 10-15 minute video I've spent 3-5 hours working on them. One of those was a video (had to be a one-take) and one of those was a PowerPoint style video that required pictures and music for a certain topic. Choosing the pictures, the music, the speed of the clips, etc took hours! So I can only imagine how long it would take to make vlogs. You would have to choose clips, edit those clips if needed, choose the speed of the clips, adding music, making sure the music is royalty free, end slate, videos for the end slate, all those extra clips Cullen adds, transition clips, and much more things that I can't fathom. Cullen really needs to be applauded because his videos are some of the best I see on YouTube. He, James from thechicklife, and Sam from samika vlogs are the only people I give this compliment too because you can tell the work they put into their vlogs by the quality of their content. A lot of other vloggers I feel fall into a pattern of lazy vlogging. The only work they do is picking clips and editting them (or over editting them if we discuss Bryan from DB). They use the same intro and end slate for freaking ever (I've actually just noticed that each intro of Cullen's is slightly different. I see new pictures or I notice the intro is longer etc.) And Cullen probably does work all night to be honest because his vlogs look like they take 3-6 hours to make. Yes, he has an issue with procrastinating, but he also might have an issue with being easily distracted. I suffered from this so bad in college that I had to either stay up until all activity stopped in my house or go somewhere extremely quiet. Noise and people just distract me so badly, so I can understand why he stays up so late at night. As long as he's not looking at the bad sites, using Ashley Madison, or cheating on his wife, then he can do what he wants with the internet lol.

Totally agree with this!! He and Katie both have said they are majorly ADD and i feel like Cullen is worse, being someone that has been diagnosed with ADD i feel his pain. And spot on.. Who give a shit what he does on the internet as long as it's not harming his relationship??

I know we've question Cullen changes in Thumbnails and what seems to be an effort to appeal to kids and there might be something to this. Clintus TV has a vlog called YouTube Has Changed. *Paraphrasing here so not quoting, but giving the general idea of what was said* He talked about six years ago it was all about showing your daily life and now things have changed. But essentially he said the audience is getting younger and younger and if they want to stay relevant they need to appeal to this age group (kid ages) and Thumbnails and Click-Bait are more important than ever in order to not be passed by. How YouTube recommends videos has also changed, but the idea they are doing something to a person that has subscribed to a channel isn't an issue or I think he meant YouTube isn't unsubscribing viewers as so many of them have complained about.

This might explain why Ruby is growing faster than many and April and Davy's Super Hero Reality TV channel is doing extremely well. I think those advertising dollars will eventually head that way too and it could threaten family channels or they may need to be satisfied with a slow/or no growth channel if they don't change to appeal to kids. I think these vloggers are more vulnerable then I thought if you consider in just six years YouTube would change this much.

Could you see Cullen starting a Super Hero Reality type channel?

One thing I thought of watching todays vlog, besides Gaines talking in the (3rd?) person when referring to herself being a toddler thing, do you also think it has something to do with what she hears on the vlogs? I just noticed today when Katie was opening the vlog how it was all "Gaines wants to do this" and "Gaines is doing that", so do you think she has just picked up on how her parents talk about her or it has nothing to do with it? Lol, this is for my own curiosity what everyone thinks?

There is a video that the YouTube channel The Game Theory did called The Real Reason YouTube Is Broken which basically says that what is "killing" these channels are the way we watch them. At its core, YouTube is a search engine, 2nd to Google. It tries to best match us to the content we search for, but it doesn't know the content of each video like Google does for webpages. Because of that, YouTube relies on the titles, the description, and the tags. The clickbait is what initially draws people in, but then there is nothing for YouTube to suggest they continue watching videos from that channel. Instead it will suggest other clickbait-y related titles from other channels. That's why children's related videos are so freaking popular: parents and children are searching for keywords like "Cars" "toy story" and "frozen" looking for clips from the movie and/or songs from the movie, but for the most part they can't exist on YouTube because of copyright issues. So, because of that, searches become populated with the next best thing: videos using Cars, Toy Story, and Frozen characters, toys, dress up, etc. Because the videos are long and have no competition they show up on the top of search results and they get the views from parents and children not clicking off of them. The videos then recommend like videos from their channel and because a lot of parents let the children just watch hours of TV and/or YouTube, the videos get tons and tons of views. Because we're not clicking off of these crap videos and favoring quality made shorter videos, those crap channels get pushed to the top and the quality ones to the bottom. That's what vloggers are competing against and I don't complain that their content is clickbait-y or more child geared, because hell we're not making them money, the children who are put in front of a screen for hours on end are making them money. It's how YouTube is for now and it's sad, but if we want to see these children eat then their parents have to reach out to the children who control the views.

And today you can really see the size similarity between Brooks and Gaines.

Also I think I like the blacksplash, its just really hard to tell with the green walls. If they were white/cream the room would look a lot better, but thats my won preference

Maybe?? But like you say i think its a toddler thing too bc Gaines reminds me of my daughter so much in the speech dept. She was a talker just like MG but had trouble grasping the pronouns. I think it has a lot to do with how toddlers pick up language skills. She hears "Gaines, do you want to paint?' so when she does want to paint she repeats what she has heard in the past "Gaines wants to paint!!" I dont think it will be something that she will always have issues with, at least we see them starting to correct her and she is picking up on that. (something we can't say about other yt parents). I will say that i'll be super sad when she gives up "hold yous" when she wants to be held! Its just so darn cute! I'm guilty of not correcting my kids when they mispronounced things sometimes, BUT both of my kids were pretty advanced in speech so i feel like i wasn't harming them by holding on to some "baby talk" and they grew out of it on their own (and i got sad lol). If i had thought there was the slightest bit of delay in their speech i never would have let it slide though. (my daughter said noon-e-horn for unicorn and lellow for yellow for the longest, with my son it was moose-kick for music. Those were there last "baby words" and by the time they were in preschool it was gone.) That being said, she does hear the 3rd person talk more than the avg kid, so it's probably not helping any, but i do think that it won't be long before she gets it.

I love the new backsplash. much better than the one they had decided with before and backed out on. I think it really pulls together that dark countertop. It's really pretty!

I'm not crazy about the backsplash. I feel like they need to go with lighter colors in the house to open it up more and make it look bigger. The dark walls and everything just close it in.

IN terms of third person... I know I would say "Mommy will be there in a moment" etc and refer to myself in third person a lot when they were younger.
Give me coffee to change the things I can and wine to accept those I cannot.

Is it actually frowned upon in America to speak in a third person manner? It's interesting to see so many people pointing it out when where I live, people try to keep children doing so for as long as they could (not necessarily everywhere they go, but more when they are around family and relatives) because they see it as a sign of respect.

We're more of a me and I culture lol. It's more of a "learning how to use proper English" problem which means using I and me rather than the third person.

Forgive my ignorance here but it's a sign of respect to refer to yourself in the 3rd person? as in its more respectful for Sally to say "Sally is going for a walk!" insead of "I'm going for a walk!"?

As weird as it sounds, yes! As PoptheButterfly has said, it must be a cultural thing. People, especially the older generation, prefers 3rd person over first. Saying I or me (especially the non-formal version) is considered impolite. I still do that when talking to my parents' friends and colleagues and even relatives. The younger ones didn't do it that much tho. But then again, we're half a globe apart. Some differences are expected, right? Image

I was wondering that too. In the U.S., people think you're weird and narcissistic if you refer to yourself in the third person. It's a running joke that only celebrities do it. So if you're ignorant, so am I.

I personally think they should have gone with a neutral backsplash if they're doing it simply to put the house on the market. Why coordinate with colors on the wall if the new owners will likely repaint to their taste? A simple subway tile would have sufficed and appeals to more buyers. If I walked in to that house as a potential buyer, I'd find the backsplash tile rather dated. They need to approach this kitchen facelift as a way to appeal to as many buyers as possible and not do it with their personal taste in mind.
