Baby Born February 16th - First bath March 4th?!?!?! What?!?

Unread post by Nopenope2016 »

Maybe it's just me. But I personally remember the nurses and doctors telling me it's very important for little ones to have baths in the first weeks of life to get them used to water on their skin and of course clean everything off them as they can't do it themselves....

Am I looking too far into this?

The umbilical cord stump has to completely fall off. That can take from 1-4 weeks.

They mean submerged bath.
Until the belly button stump falls off babies only get sponge baths.

The US is very different from the UK on this. Here we are encouraged to bathe our babies daily regardless of whether the umbilical cord clamp has fallen off.

Canada is similar with the UK on this too
I was only told to make sure to dry the cord after the bath

In Australia we just sponge bath babies until their umbilical cord falls off. It's actually seen as a bad thing to bath a baby straight away - the vernix is a natural moisturiser and it protects the baby's skin. It always seems weird to me to see a baby bathed soon after birth... Especially with soap...

I think it must depend on the midwife/hospital because I'm also in Australia and they told us to wait 24-48 hours before bathing our baby because of the vernix. We were never told we were only able to do sponge baths until the umbilical cord came off.

I think I was lost because I am from the UK, as someone said above I've always been advised to do it straight away. Though I guess everyone is different :) exactly why I asked.

Yes it's not advised to give babies a full bath until after the umbilical cord comes off. Warm wet wash rag to clean them up is fine, but do not submerge the baby in water.

US, but homebirther. Vernix is good, bathing should be delayed for a few days. No need to wait until the stump falls off to bathe, just gently dry it when you're done.

My son kept peeing on his stump anyway, so I doubt bathing him changed anything.
