I spend a lot of time in California, live in Texas, and I've never even heard of heat lightning before today. Definitely a regional thing.

Yeah, I live in an area of Texas where it's not as humid (I learned from google that it mostly happens on warm, humid nights). It probably gets more common the further south/east you go.
