1-year-old screaming in crib - separation anxiety?

Post by MamaJoAnna » Fri Jun 17, 2016 5:39 pm

So my little guy just turned 1 on Sunday and for the past three nights, he has screamed and cried for a long time whenever he was put in his crib for bedtime. Nothing dietary has changed over the past few days. He's eaten the same things, drank the same things, been teething (top two central incisors are finally coming in) but been treated for it with our usual treatments, and we make sure he is full and has a clean diaper before we attempt to put him down for the night. He's currently playing in his pack and play almost an hour after it was supposed to be bedtime and we (hubby and I) don't like the CIO method. Is this separation anxiety? What do I do about it?

You know me, not a mom but I do have a bit of knowledge in the EC department.

It could be separation anxiety.

Is it possible that he's going through sleep regression? Separation anxiety is often tied to sleep regression. Though it is not as common as earlier sleep regressions, it is certainly possible for a baby to go through one at 12 months old. This typically affects naps but sometimes can affect bedtime. I'll assume that you've experienced sleep regression with him before so you probably know his signs.

I learned from taking care of babies/toddlers that the best thing to do is to comfort them until the crying stops and then explain to them (well as much as you can explain to a baby) that it is bedtime and it's time to sleep. You want to reassure the child without creating a new "negative" bedtime habit.

As I'm sure you know, it's important to set up a calm environment before bedtime to make sure that they have winded down and are tired. No one wants to go to sleep when they're awake! :P Routine, routine, routine.

The worst thing you can do is try to run out of the room. Try to let him know that mom will be back and mom is leaving but only until morning.

Good luck, mama. Stay calm and it'll pass.

Fellow mom here to 6 1/2 year old daughter :-)

I feel your pain. Mine did this same stuff when she was around this age and it was so stressful at times. Of course it could be the teething since you said your LO had some teeth coming in. Could be an ear infection and it hurts him to lay down. Or yes, it could be separation anxiety.

One thing I've learned from watching "Supernanny" over the years was her bedtime technique. You can watch it here
It worked for us but to be honest I am also guilty of letting DD cry it out, too.

Well, he did fine getting to bed last night once he was finally tired (an hour after bedtime) but then at 4am he woke up screaming and the only way he was consoled was me rocking him for at least a half hour. He fussed when I put him down but he settled and went back to sleep.

I get that, I do. It's just not like him to be so hysterical. I was even asked if "something had happened for him to not like the crib." Seriously? I don't abuse my child...

sorry like crawling or walking , it can interrupt the usual sleep routine. I don't know why but a child Health nurse told me this with my first and has held true with the others.
Also at 1 they understand that items not in the line of sight are still there just not visible so baby may be crying because he realizes you are there after leaving room and crying is a great way to get you back
