Cortisone Injections

Unread post by subject99 »

Who has had them done? How long did they last for you? Even if they did work. If you know somebody who has had them how well did it work for them.

I've been given the option to get my face/jaw joints numbing injections and cortisone injections. I'm very very very weary about this. I've been told by 4 pain specialist that I will end up with a serious infection due to the fake discs I have in my jaw joints. I saw my surgeon 2 weeks ago and he said he isn't afraid and that he would do it. I told him what the other 4 specialist said and he didn't seem to care. He did say it could work, maybe a week, a month, 3 months, or not at all. I'm literally grasping at any option at this point.

I had one cortisone shot in my shoulder. It relieved the pain that the chiropracter, and any form of physical therapy could not help. They kept telling me to wait on getting the shot--not sure why. It was painful as all hell, but for me it actually did take the pain away. My problem in that shoulder came after a mountain bike injury where I landed on my shoulder instead of my butt. :) I got bone spurs growing in the joint there. The chiro/PT was supposed to break up the spurs. I don't know how this would relate to your jaw though. If it doesn't harm you, I'd consider it. But 4 specialists are telling you not to do it? It would be hard to go against that advice. You don't want to make it worse. Sorry you're in so much pain!

Ugh I don't know. I told my pain specialist yesterday what he said. He said that u should give it a try. He said again that I'm stuck with chronic pain forever and that the pain will truly never go away. The appointment for the injections is November 22nd at 2pm. I'm getting put to sleep too. I guess the other doctors might not wanted to be liable if I did get an infection. I mean my surgeon does this for a living and I can assume he had giving other people with fake discs injections before. I'm sure they turned out fine. But sadly I'm always that percentage that will go wrong does go wrong for me. How were you after? Were you able to carry on like normal?

It was sore for a few days, because damn the injection itself hurt--I was awake. Then I felt relief. I could move my shoulder freely again, without pain. I'll never have full range of motion, but close to it. Just not having the pain was fine with me. I'm not sure why everyone was telling me to wait to get the shot. It's possible they did break up the bone deposits, and the shot helped afterward. I'm also not sure how many cortisone injections a person can have in a lifetime. It can mess some things up, but I didn't have side effects. They need to put you under so that they can inject it in the exact spot it's needed, and you can't flinch or move, I guess? I hope it goes well for you, and will bring you some relief.

He says my face will be very bruised. Yes I have to be put asleep so a needle can literally go into both my jaw joints where the discs sit. He said I should ba able to go back to day to day activities. He said I may feel relief right away but it will more then likely take a week for me to feel relief.

I dunno, I'm just worried about getting an infection and be sick for god knows how long.

Wow, I hope it works out for you. I would probably take the risk on the chance it worked.

I'm still on the fence but my dad called to confirm it. It's pretty expensive too. I can't remember if my doctor said its 500 an injection or 500 a round of injections. But he told me he would wave his fees because I've had such a hard time in getting any pain relief. The only fee I have to pay is the anaesthetic. Which is only 139.78, which my dad is paying for (Thankfully!). I'm no longer on his insurance since I'm not in college anymore. That's why he had to call and confirm it. To get the amount . It looks like it's a go guys. I'm going to be nervous right until I get to sleep.
