Re: FatheringAutism
I am on a few autism parent boards (my son is high-functioning ASD) and someone asked for YT channels to share-- I brought up fathering autism. The responses I got were that they are a good family but "sugar coated"-- this from other parents to severely impacted kiddos. They recommended Kreeds world. My opinion is that not showing the worst is probably out of respect up Abbie, but just thought I'd throw it out there.

Re: FatheringAutism
I will mention one thing that they said in a FAQ- someone asked how they deal with friends & they said they don't have any friends (and kind of giggled that uncomfortable laugh). That's an example of not really getting into the gritty-- as a special needs parent, isolation is huge because it's hard to feel like you belong anywhere. I'd love to hear them speak on that and other tough subjects more because it's a part of bringing awareness.

Re: FatheringAutism
I watched Kreeds world as well until he passed away. In my opinion, Kreeds world was completely different. They didn't focus on anything but Kreed and his severe Autism. And he was a lot different from Abbie in Fathering Autism. Every person with Autism is so different you can't really compare and saw Kreeds world was more "real". I never miss a vlog from Fathering Autism and in my opinion they are as real as it gets. Their vlogs are more than just showing Abbie. They vlog their lives and their families lives, and Autism is just a part of their lives and but not their entire focus. I also think they don't show every single meltdown Abbie might have due to her privacy. Abbie has some gagging behaviors in which she will gag herself to the point of getting sick. I would not want to show that nor would I think viewers would like to see it. Abbie is not on display for the world to watch her like she is an zoo animal. They have respect for their daughter and are spreading awareness of Autism with kindness and dignity for their daughter. I feel like they are totally open and honest and show a great representation of what Autism looks like in their world.ohaudrey wrote:I am on a few autism parent boards (my son is high-functioning ASD) and someone asked for YT channels to share-- I brought up fathering autism. Re: FatheringAutism
See my second comment- it's more than the behaviors, but also what it means to parent kids with autism. They seem to gloss over the impact it has on them, for some reason. Don't get me wrong, they are doing a great job, just something to consider. Like you said, every individual is different and that pertains to those on the spectrum as well as their family.Bollie_Dollie_4_Life wrote:I watched Kreeds world as well until he passed away. Re: FatheringAutism
I have a son younger than Abbie with Autism so I love watching the vlog. I can really relate and I feel like I've learned things through watching. Since Abbie is a few years older than my son, they have "been there, done that", I feel like I can learn from them. Have you ever seen their facebook "live"? events they hold every few weeks? They answer a lot of questions then as well. I guess I just don't think they don't show how Autism effects their lives, I feel like I get a good overview of how they have good and bad days. They really don't let Abbie's Autism slow them down too much, they purposely go out in public and do things and go places. I feel like they show the hard times as well as the Autism "wins". Just my opinion of course! Thanks for sharing your point of view!

Re: FatheringAutism
I love them. I don't feel sugarcoat is the right way to describe it, but they don't let their lives be 100% about autism. They may dismiss things but I don't think it's because they want to hide it, I think it's more that they don't want every aspect of their lives to be about autism. I agree it's not fair to compare them to Kreed's life on the internet because everything they shared was heavily autism oriented. Every social media platform of theirs was about autism. That's not what Fathering Autism is, despite autism being in the name.

Re: FatheringAutism
To me Kreed's world was just that...........Kreeds world (him living with Autism) where Fathering Autism is a family vlog about the entire family, with Autism being involved in their world, but it doesn't revolve around Abbie. They show all parts of their lives, they show Asa's job (before he just closed his shop), they show Priscilla's volunteering work, they show Priscilla's cooking, they show Isaiah's accomplishments in school, football and photography, they show extended family visiting, and they show Abbie and how Autism affects their lives.

Re: FatheringAutism
I didn't even realise they had a thread, I love their videos. What they're doing is pretty amazing, probably inspiring a lot of people.
Re: FatheringAutism
Just found them and i love them. I have no issue with the potty training video, nothing was shown, they just showed the steps they teach her which is very helpful for other parents with special needs kids. I really like how committed they are to Abbie but still manage to have their own lives, the mom and dad seem pretty relaxed even in stressful situations and the brother is just awesome. Just the amount of work they put in to give Abbie her training and help her throughout the day is amazing, they show multiple times how they make her do her own things by giving her instructions. They could easily just do it for her and it would take a fraction of the time it takes now but they want her to learn and so spent way more time doing very easy tasks to train her.

For those who still think the potty thing is an issue. Clearly they have Abbie’s best interest at heart and absolutely respect her privacy and autonomy. I’m guessing they’ve read hear too and pay extra attention to this concern as Asa has mentioned it multiple times in vlogs that they pay extra close attention to protecting her privacy in this aspect of her life but still want to share her successes when it comes to potty training, as she has made improvements recently.
I still love the channel and have enjoyed watching them grow. They do an excellent job educating viewers about autism life. They are so down to earth and such a “normal” family compared your typical vloggers. Abbie has come pretty far since I started watching, it’s been cool to see her grow and improve in so many aspects of her life.

Re: FatheringAutism
I think they’re really well liked! Well, I really enjoy them at least! They are completely different from most of your YouTube families, it a breath of fresh air. Not just with the autism aspect but with being a normal family who just shows normal family life. I feel like it’s what I used to enjoy about family vlogging a few years ago. I’m really going to miss Isaiah when he goes to college. I love him and Abbie together.ACarATorchAJess wrote:I just found this family and I'm in love. Re: FatheringAutism
Honestly the mom rubs me the wrong way. You can tell she "turns it on" for the camera". She does a really weird fake smile too. I know its fathering autism but she's not goo hands on with Abbie and anytime asa or Isaiah go out they rush what they're doing go help mom like okay they dont do that for Asa or isaiah. She just seems lazy and a little fake and peddling that bad limelife makeup. The rest I like.

Re: FatheringAutism
Wow. I couldn't disagree more. Every person should ''turn it on'' for camera a little bit. ''Damn if you do, damn if you don't'' -situation here maybe. I think their filming style is pretty balanced and down to earth.Lollybuttt09 wrote: ↑Mon May 27, 2019 5:26 pm Honestly the mom rubs me the wrong way. You can tell she "turns it on" for the camera". Re: FatheringAutism
So glad this thread was suggested the other day! Was looking for new people to watch. This family is adorable. My only problem is the parents not being at a healthy weight. Their daughter needs them for as long as possible.

Re: FatheringAutism
Priscilla recently got weight loss surgery and has lost over 50 lbs. so far. Asa was doing the pre-surgery diet with her, but not sure if he has continued with healthier eating habits. They're trying, in any case.

Re: FatheringAutism
Priscilla’s weight loss surgery has made for interesting content. I’m proud of her for taking that major step! You could tell from their videos before they are large portions of southern style really hearty meals. They’re trying to better Abbie’s diet too but not that hard I feel like. I wish they’d tell their viewers and their family (Priscilla’s own mon bought Abbie like three boxes of little Debbie cakes) to cut it out with sending them junk. They said they wanted to cut down on her sugar and have a better diet for her to. They need to tell people to quit sending them buckets of junk.

Re: FatheringAutism
Anyone else feel really bad for Isaiah? I don't like how they seem to guilt him into doing stuff for his sister. Poor kid looks done. He probably can't wait until college, he will have so much more freedom, i think he will come to resent his parents in time when he realises how much they put upon him. He does way too much.
