8 Passengers: No Rules & Private Schools | Part 9
Re: 8 Passengers: No Rules & Private Schools | Part 9
I have to admit, I didn't like their Christmas (Christmas vlo) at all.
I actually do agree with them on toning down Christmas. Christmas shouldn't be only about the presents and I don't think there need to be tons of presents for every child, since they are easily overwhelmed and can't actually appreciate what they've got (as seen in many of the Gardner Quad Squad vlogs....)
So I'm totally fine with giving just a few presents to each kid, but I truly think those presents should be thoughtful and special. And that's the point where I think the 8Passengers had a pretty sad Christmas. All of the kids got a toothbrush. All of the kids got a cologne. All of the kids got a pocket knife. There were hardly any personal presents at all. Shari was really happy about the book, and Chad about the hoodie. But other than that? Plus: Russell's ring was way to small, so were Abby's shoes and Chad's board shorts (?) looked tiny. The only person who really got a very personal present and was extremely happy about it was Ruby herself.
Today I had to wait for my parents pretty much the whole day, so I had a lot of time to watch Christmas vlogs. Besides the 8Passengers, I watched the Deru Crew, Bonnie Hoellein, April and Davey, the Yawi family and even the Epic Life. And all of them, even narcissistic Bonnie, gave their kids some very thoughtful presents which made the kids extremely happy. Some of them got quite a lot of stuff, which I don't believe is necessary. But there was so much joy and kids being sooo happy about there gifts.
And then there were the 8Passengers kids with their toothbrush, cologne and pocket knife....
I don't know. I really wished there would have been at least one very special gift to each of the kids.
And poor Abby. Even if she didn't really know what to wish for, her parents could have thought of something that she might like. Even at the sibling gift exchange she got a tennis dress, although she only had a couple of lessons with a neighbor girl back in the fall.

Re: 8 Passengers: No Rules & Private Schools | Part 9
I've rewatched some of the previous videos from Ruby and Bonnie as well as watching this year's and I'm wondering - what's with all the guns? Is it that common for kids (and adults) in the US to get all these guns etc? Or is it a mormon thing?
In my country it would be super weird to get such a thing, we're not even allowed to have guns etc.
Also, I always wonder why all these girls (Kesley, Danielle, Klai) are so into Chad when he's 2 years younger than them? Now that I'm older it doesn't really matter but when I was in my teens it was embarrassing to have a younger boyfriend

Me too. Like you said before, it's good that they toned down Christmas. They don't need a huge excess of anything. But I agree, the kids should have gotten one thoughtful and special gift and then a few other ones. Even if it's just something they've been wanting for a while, it is still something that would make their day.LilaRose wrote: I don't know. How do you not know what size your children wear? (Of course, this is Ruby we're talking about, and she didn't know that Eve was wearing snow boots until they got to the airport.) Maybe it was in a brand she had never bought before and it ran small, I guess.
I couldn't get over the lack of toys, either. Even my 16 year old got 4 video games.
So how many of the kids are going to put their pocket knives in their carry on luggage to come home?

I know!! Everyone acted like it was so funny and quirky and smart, and I cringed the whole time. It wasn't impressive, and she shouldn't have been encouraged for it.shortstop wrote:Haha!! Me too!! Yeah, encouraging your child to mouth off to a TSA agent is stupid. They're lucky they got through security at all. Those folks are just doing their job. It was so jerky, and Ruby just laughed and kept on filming.warmhearted wrote:I know!! Everyone acted like it was so funny and quirky and smart, and I cringed the whole time. Did they bring those gifts from home or did they buy them in Hawaii? If they did bring them from home, it would make sense for them to bring small items.LilaRose wrote:I have to admit, I didn't like their Christmas (Christmas vlo) at all.

Yeah, poor kids have to go to Hawaii for a few days. I'm so sad for them...Catface2 wrote:Makes sense the older 2 might be upset..they wanted to spend time with their crushes over break and now they have to be assaulted by Eve for a long trip instead. BummerTiger27 wrote:Ruby seemed well aware that some of the kids would be disappointed by the news. I probably would have been too. I’d be excited about a vacation, but not about being gone Christmas. I like traditions and the comfort of my home, it would make me sad to miss out on those. I think that was Sharis issue. Ruby also mentioned Christmas break was in part a chance for them to hang out with friends, which is where some of chads disappointment probably came from (and maybe the thought of being stuck with his family 24/7 for 1-2 weeks?). I think walking out the door was reasonable. He was upset and didn’t want to show that on camera. Those kids live their lives in front of a camera for the world to see. I’m glad Ruby didn’t address it more because I’m sure chad asked her not to and I’m hoping that meant she respected his feelings. Everyone seemed to have come around for the most part once they got there.warmhearted wrote:I watched Chad walk out also. I think he may have been overwhelmed, considering he's used to spending Christmas with family/at home. It's likely just out of his comfort zone and unexpected. He was probably taking a breather or trying to calm down outside or something. Nonetheless, without speculation, his and Shari's reactions were both incredibly neutral and they almost seemed a bit disappointed? I don't know what they were expecting, or what would have gotten a big reaction like the other kids. I scrolled through some comments and only one or two people mentioned Chad walking out, so I doubt it will be addressed.
As for Abby and Julie knowing beforehand, I think maybe they overheard something and asked? The description says they've been planning it for a while now, so I'm guessing the girls overheard somehow and were told not to tell anybody. Seems like they did a good job, and were still excited about it.

I don't know. And I'm not talking about big gifts. I'm talking about personal gifts. A pocket knife for each kid, a cologne for each kid, a toothbrush for each kid, a ring for each kid.... pretty lame and not thoughtful at all.ba1006 wrote:Did they bring those gifts from home or did they buy them in Hawaii? Re: 8 Passengers: No Rules & Private Schools | Part 9
Don’t forget Abby’s swim goggles and shoes! I see what Ruby was saying when Abby should have told them what she wanted for Christmas but maybe asking for things makes her uncomfortable. I feel really uncomfortable asking for things so my husband knows to pay attention to what I talk about, the videos I watch on YouTube, and what I stop to look at in the store. Ruby knows Abby loves book. She could have bought her a couple books that she doesn’t have or a little higher in her reading level. She could have even gotten her a gift card for books, that would have been much better! I don’t think not telling what you want for Christmas deserves goggles and shoes that are too small.LilaRose wrote:I don't know. And I'm not talking about big gifts. I'm talking about personal gifts. It was so uncomfortable watching ruby tell Russell he had to wear that ugly necklace. She was forcing it on him. What 7 year old boy wants to wear a gold chain like that.

Right! And when she asked him why he took it off, he got uncomfortable and shy and said “I don’t know”, which is obviously “I don’t want to wear it/I don’t like it” but he can’t say that on camera because millions of people will think he’s ungrateful etc. He doesn’t appreciate jewellery and he may never, so why give it to him? Or better yet, why make him wear it? If he doesn’t like it right now, keep it in the box and keep it away until he’s a little older or wants to wear it.Ckc717 wrote:It was so uncomfortable watching ruby tell Russell he had to wear that ugly necklace. Re: 8 Passengers: No Rules & Private Schools | Part 9
I cannot get over how bad ruby is at getting her kids Christmas presents. This was by far the worst year. The theme seemed to be boring bland jewelry and pocket knives. What is with the Griffiths family obsession with pocket knives and jewelry for kids at such young ages??
And then saying in a public blog Julie got the nicest one? Kind of rude knowing the other kids will see that.
Also- she doesn't know any of her kids sizes? The bathing suits were all quite hideous and poor Julie and Abby having to match and Russell and Chad having to match.
My husband and I adopted two teen boys in June and just did their first Christmas with them. While they did get shoes and cologne- they also got drones and some video games and like an inexpensive little virtual reality thing- because we realize that while they are nearing adulthood- childhood is fleeting and toys are exciting on Christmas.
I can't imagine being a 7 year old little boy opening up a gold chain, a ring, Cologne, and a pocket knife. Him requesting the pocket knife just shows how eager to please these kids are. The drone was the only semi decent gift he received.
I rarely comment- but I couldn't hold back this time. All the kids seemed pretty disappointed. Ruby really doesn't know her children. She only knows what she tries to project onto them.

Re: 8 Passengers: No Rules & Private Schools | Part 9
I agree with all of this. I'm assuming most of their "Christmas money" was spent on the Hawaii trip, but it shouldn't have come at the cost of the kids' presents. The girls liked their perfumes (Julie especially, she said it was her favourite present) and they were nice, but they are only small gifts...stocking stuffers, really. Abby enjoys reading a lot, and they could have gotten her more than one book...Maybe some makeup for the girls to play about with, or some hair products to mess with. Just things that they can spend a weekend playing with and being kids with. Spend time with your kids to get to know them and what they're interested in. Russel could have done with some cool art supplies, a remote control car, some books... I think Eve was the only child who was 100% (or close to) satisfied with her presents because they were all toys and apparently Ruby knows her very well since she's not in school like she should be... anyway, I can understand why they don't want to give their kids electronics, but there's nothing wrong in teaching them responsibility. I think the kids would enjoy a Nintendo or something of the sort. If anything, it teaches them accountability for their belongings.skyblueandblack wrote:I cannot get over how bad ruby is at getting her kids Christmas presents. This was by far the worst year. I sort of think they got lazy this year. I think they wanted to go away to Hawaii, but realized they need to buy presents for the kids, and they didn't have enough time, so they thought the trip would have to do. They aren't the worst parents in the world, but I wouldn't label those kids ungrateful for a second if they made a fuss about what they got. They have every right to be disappointed.

Everything just felt very thoughtless. The Griffiths girls just get what they want their kids to want- not what they would actually want. Remember when kid Julie wanted a sewing machine and they wouldn't get it for her? Or Jackson and the rock pillows? I don't watch adult Julie's channel- but Bonnie seems to be the only Griffiths sister capable of knowing what her kids would like for gifts. (One of her few saving graces.)
I think that Ruby could tell that the kids weren't thrilled. They barely even faked it this year. It was so awkward with her saying to each kid "you had a good Christmas!" and each kid just staring back at her wearing their over priced and super random gold chains saying "yep" with no enthusiasm.
And just to clarify- I know for some kids in the US- this would be a fine Christmas. But these kids spend their lives working for free for their parents. The family has plenty of money.
Would it have killed them to get the kids a Switch and a bunch of games? Or a bunch of fun board games and a laser tag kit? (I got a highly rated one at Kohls for 22.00!). Or if no group gifts- then why not tack on an extra "fun" item for each kid like some cool craft kits or remote control cars?
I remember last year they all at least got Cosmo due to a sponshorship but at least that was kind of neat.
They're only kids once. They have the rest of their lives to open adult-ish gold chains and pocket knives.

Re: 8 Passengers: No Rules & Private Schools | Part 9
Exactly. For an adult, this would have been a fine Christmas what with the pocket knives, perfume, cologne and jewellery and all. But they're children! If they don't want to buy them each electronics, they can buy them something to use as a family such as an X-Box or a Switch or like you said, a laser tag kit. And you're right, they didn't hide their disappointment as much as I thought they would. When Abby was showing her gifts, she shows her book and reads the title and says "..it's a book" and then puts it down. It just didn't look enthusiastic and after Ruby TOLD her she had a good Christmas, I could see her disappointment. I feel so badly for those kids. So badly. And money isn't an issue here, and it would be different if it was. But money isn't the issue, so there's no reason as to why these kids got so little.skyblueandblack wrote:Everything just felt very thoughtless.
Regarding your earlier post, I'm glad your kids got some awesome gifts for Christmas and were allowed to be kids. They'll appreciate their gifts much more because they're curated for them, and watching their faces light up when it's something they can't wait to get their hands on is priceless!

Re: 8 Passengers: No Rules & Private Schools | Part 9
I am hoping when they get back home, Santa left them some real presents under the tree. I mean, first of all... why would you take your kids to Hawaii over Christmas? Sure it's an amazing vacation, but... for Christmas? Kids wanna be home... or around extended family and friends. Not hours away on a tropical island. That's something I would love now, but definitely not as a child... not at Christmas. Over summer vacation, I would have loved it though! Secondly, the gifts... I realize Ruby wanted to cut back on toys because things from last year were used a bit and never again... but, she still should have gotten them all at least one or two toys! And you don't get a 6-8 year old boy, a chain/necklace and expect them to enjoy it and want to wear it. You save something like that for when they are older and can appreciate it. TBH she might as well have just given them all gift cards, so they could get what they actually wanted.warmhearted wrote: Exactly. But money isn't the issue, so there's no reason as to why these kids got so little.

I posted this on the LeRoy's board... but, I will add it here too. Chad had a Q&A on his IG story today... someone asked "Will you date Kesley?" and he said "When I turn 16 I will" When he turns 16, she will be 18... and be on crush 994389 by then... so, good luck with that Chad. Not to be rude, but... Kesley seems to have a new "crush" every few months. And I doubt strongly, that this one will last 2 years, and she will be, at 18, interested in a 16 year old... *shrugs*

I don't think I've ever commented here. I rarely watch them because Ruby really annoys me. That Christmas vlog was awful. The gifts looked like things they picked up in the airport gift shops, as an afterthought once they got to Hawaii.
