If you see an ad on their videos then they are getting some kind of kickback. If no advertisers find their videos suitable for ads, it really doesn’t matter what the yt guidelines say, their checks are passed through yt as a middle man, but the ads are more or less their paycheck. People are making this out to be some kind of ethics crackdown on the part of YouTube. The reality is, YouTube doesn’t exist to be a platform for creators. Like all businesses, yt exists to generate profit. They do this by selling ad space. It may not be fair, but if the advertisers don’t like your content, regardless of your views, you could just never get paid. Clearly companies like blue apron find their channel suitable for advert, and direct adverts are more profitable than depending on ads/view. They’re going to be fine, but I think going forward their videos will feature more sponsored content.
All that being said, it appears their videos are being less heavily promoted by yt. I have not seen a single video of theirs on my suggested page, or in any suggested videos. I think since there was some implication of suggested videos having part in the gross shit that was going on, they’ve just played it safe and stopped promoting ANYTHING potentially problematic. This, in synergy with demonitisation, could mean the end of a LOT of mommy channels. You don’t get the yt viewership paycheck, and then even if you can post a sponsored video, barely anyone will watch it. Views drop, sponsorships stop rolling in, then what? Keep posting “for the memories”?
