I honestly think he will quit and pull some other random profession out of his ass. Hey guys, Landon is a real estate agent! No wait, now he is a weatherman! Oops, spoke too soon, now he is a pharmacist!
I do feel bad that BYU kind of led him on then let him down, but he is stuck on this dream of becoming a professor because he "loves teaching" and thinks they'll have the same 'lifestyle' as 8 Passengers. At the age of 32, with 4 kids, he can't keep waiting around to get into a PhD program. If he doesn't want Julie to work then he needs to find a stable career at this point. He should have followed Julie into nursing - and he still could.

Julie sounds so simple when she speaks. The way she is just willing to let Landon do whatever he wants at the expense of her and the kids is very telling to me.
Also regarding her Jared example, it just never occurs to these simple women that other applicants just may be more qualified. Nope, clearly it just isn’t fair and their white Christian husbands are just being picked on.

WOW! Talk about being completely clueless. If Jared was repeatedly denied from 30 schools, it means that he is not qualified enough and that others are more qualified than him. Same goes for Landon.
So is he not going to get a job while he is waiting to NOT get into the PhD program again? What a loser, to have a family and only do school! This may also affect his application status, I wonder if they have ever thought of that. I know so many people who work and do education at the same time. They must be living off of some form of support and Julie's small sponsorships, like the hemorrhoid cream.

That was 100% BULLSHIT from Julie. Universities like BYU don't "lead you on" ... he just didn't qualify for the PhD program. That's HIS fault! I was shocked he got into a masters programs at BYU to begin with. I think Ruby's husband pulled a LOT of strings to get him as far as he went. Don't be fooled by her ignorance.
He's just not an academic. He CAN teach. He can go be a PE/health teacher at a high school. He's just not qualified for the job he "thinks" he's qualified for.
I sometimes wonder if he suffers from some sort of mental illness. He's definitely "off" and thinks very highly of himself.
When you are denied by multiple schools there is usually a reason. If there is only one spot in a program then there's an extremely high chance that you will be denied. So they're going to sit around and wait for something to happen? What if they encounter the same thing again? At least he will be around for the Easter egg hunts, I guess.

He better attend all of the Easter egg hunts in order to find the $100 golden egg to buy groceries for the week, lol!

Agreed.
I don’t watch J&L’s vlogs often but I know their story and their ups and downs with Landon’s schooling and career aspirations. I get feeling all over the place with your professional future—I’m there myself as I’m trying to grapple with what I want to do moving forward and how to best use my degree given the job opportunities and my other non-professional goals. The first thing I wish I could tell Landon is that while it is WONDERFUL that he wants to be a professor, the road to applying and actually getting a professorship is SO challenging and EXTREMELY competitive. For one, there are WAY more PhD candidates that graduate per year than actual available professorships… I seem to get the impression that both he and Julie think that once he gets into a PhD program and graduates, there will be a job offer waiting for him and they can carry on, smooth sailing with the rest of their lives. Academia doesn’t work that way… And just because you have two BSc, and two masters, you aren’t entitled to whatever you want.
I also feel like there might be more to the whole “I’m quitting medical school” story than they have let people know… Something just feels off with their narrative and maybe those details that they haven't spoken about publicly have contributed to his rejection from BYU and the school in Idaho or Iowa... I dont remember which state they said.

My sister is a doctor and around his age. I just never understood why he left or dropped out. I always assumed he flunked out and they were too embarrassed to admit it. Then he received an MBA (maybe?) from a basically non-existent school.
They definitely aren't telling the truth about Landon's "career" path.
And it was Idaho...not Iowa (gotta stay near Mormonland!). From his comments in the video they seemed to know BYU wasn't going to work out and University of Idaho was their last hope.
I agree with everything said above but it wouldn’t be fair not to mention that Landon has a job teaching at BYU currently (as an assistant or adjunct of sorts). He can still do that while waiting for his other dreams to come true.

That's FAR from a full-time job. It looks like he taught ONE class and he's not scheduled to teach again this fall. No, he doesn't teach at BYU...that's a LIE!

No offense, but Landon seems pretty dumb. I don't think I'd have the patience for him to try all these schools and all these programs and NEVER GET A CAREER!!! It's probably been about 15 years he's been in college and graduate schools!
He's wasting time. He just needs to get a job.
I just wonder how on earth they are surviving financially. They have 4 kids and an unsuccessful YouTube channel, and her husband refuses to grow up. I would be so stressed out if I were in Julie’s shoes.
I have asked how they are making it financially since joining this forum. Oh according to them, they have their youtube channel-sounding like they had a successful channel. They are going to enjoy this year off and have fun. They got a bit defensive on the assumption video when people had submitted why he kept bouncing around career wise. Guess this might be why people had the assumptions!
Guess it is a Griffith deal to put the blame on someone else when things don't work out. The way Julie was blaming others on his not getting accepted was a big turnoff. Like someone said, I imagine Kevin has helped Landon quite a bit at BYU.
Their statement about wanting a career where Landon could have the hours where he do all the stuff with family that he wanted-well who don't! My husband worked shift work and quite a bit of overtime before his retirement because he wanted to provide for his family! You have a family Landon, settle down and get a job to take care of your family! Plus in the assumptions vlog they said they wanted more children-wonder if they will have another baby while doing all this schooling!
By the time he gets his PhD (if he ever does) his kids are going to be at the very least 4 years older right? He mentioned how he wanted the "lifestyle" and to be able to be the soccer coach etc. Get a job with the degrees you already have and I am pretty sure you'd have enough time to do those things NOW. It basically sounds like Julie is willing to wait however long it takes.

Let's be honest. He flunked out of this process.
I'm pretty sure he and Julie have referred to his teaching as being a teaching assistant for an anatomy lab. While the responsibilities of TA's can differ by school, typically teaching assistants aren't doing the leg work designing the labs, delivering the opening lab lecture etc. They are there to help monitor students, answer questions, grade lab reports and hold review sessions. At least that is how it was when I was in grad school (in the sciences). A TA position does pay but it is no where near the full salary of the primary lab instructor and doesn't come with benefits etc.
That being said, some colleges do hire lab instructors with masters degrees and do not require that they have a PhD... maybe that sort of position would be a better option for Landon.

They gotta do something while he's off this year going to Easter egg hunts and the movies.
Does he need to teach at college level?
They are grateful because their parents didn't beat them as kids and they have the perfect family with two boys and girls. I'm not sure what that has to do with Landon not being accepted into the program.
Lifestyle? If I were Julie, I'd say your education should be enough to find a good job where you're home in the evenings. It is difficult to have Landon's dreams at his age with family obligations and Julie doesn't appear to want to use her nursing degree to help with family finances.
According to her Insta, Ellie was there visiting and gave her “all kinds of ideas about what to do.” She suggested she move Lucy and Emma downstairs into the bigger basement bedroom, and move the boys and their bunk beds upstairs into the smaller bedroom.
Basically let Emma deal with the baby downstairs where no one has to hear them and be disturbed. How nice
So many things I want to say about Landon's schooling situation...
1) His TA position was likely connected to his student status so not necessarily something he can do at will. Also I am in a relatively low cost of living area like they are in. Grad TAs at my university get paid around $20k per year for a 20h/wk position. He could get a lot more doing athletic training.
2)the BYU exercise science program only has 10 PhD students total. So maybe he shouldn't have been terribly surprised that they only take in 1 student. I do wonder if there may have been some "leading on" in the sense that the very small department knew Landon moved his whole family there for that purpose. Maybe they weren't upfront with him about his chances. Though maybe Kevin helped him get into the masters program and it became obvious that Landon really didn't have what it takes for the PhD. They even rejected his offer to pay for his PhD! Which no one does but seriously they didn't want him.
3) from the website for the program: "This program prepares students for leadership at the highest level of their profession. Most students become university or college faculty."
I highly doubt that most students become faculty! No PhD program would ever promise this. It's just not true. Ok I'm not in exercise science so maybe it's true for that field.or maybe byu is like the top program and only takes a very select few applicants that they can say this. But I call BS. Speaking of misleading....
4) I'm all for figuring out what you want to do and having joy in your work and also the lifestyle it affords. (I think Landon may not understand that being a professor is a VERY time consuming and stressful job). I myself went back to grad school at 26 for a PhD. But I also didn't have 4 kids. Or an expectation of becoming a professor. In my field it is normal to spend 8 years as a post-doc and even then the chances of becoming a professor are astronomically small. Average age of hire as a prof is like 45, and that is starting the PhD around 22, not 32.
ETA: not to mention then it's 5-6 years of incredible stress trying to get tenure. So Landon is looking at secure employment by age 60....
5) His earning potential with his bachelor's degree in exercise science could get him around $50k/year according to the BLS website. Having a masters may kick it up a notch but I'm going for worst case scenario. Nurses make a median of $70k. So they could be making about $120k if they just worked like every other freaking family trying to make ends meet. Or if Julie could work and he focused on YouTube and did some side gigs as a personal trainer at a gym if he wants to do education. He could start a YT channel about all the "stuff he knows". Ugh. Why do they just force it. They are literally choosing to be poor for the sake of a dream that is never going to be realized. I feel bad for the kids.
Sorry for the extreme length of this post! The ignorance in their video really got to me!

I got an associate's degree with a local two year college and also worked there briefly. Maybe it was just our state, but the instructor was just required to have a degree higher than what was available at the college. So his Masters degree would have worked out great. Why don't he try a community college for an instructor's position? I just can't get over how with a family to provide for, all he is worried about it getting this doctorate! When I said my husband had to work a bunch of overtime, it wasn't that he volunteered for it, they would just be shorthanded. Did he miss stuff he would have liked to do-yes he did. Landon wanting to be available to do stuff with the family-in the real world that might not be how it goes down.
Does anyone know what Landon's father does? Maybe he feels obligated to live up to something his family/parents instilled in him as a kid. I wonder how he was planning to pay for the PhD on his own? Family money? His wife's family's money? Massive amounts in loans?
I wonder how much he's already racked up in student loans just to get this far??? I wouldn't be surprised if it's more than $100K. As insane as the number sounds, it's not hard to do if you're a "professional" student and he was going to medical school and getting an MBA. YIKES.
I'd probably cry if I were Julie. They are in a pretty shitty situation.
I was a bit surprised Landon suggested to BYU he would cover his own cost for graduate school. I can't image this high cost and I'm assuming he may have other student loans from previous years he has been in college. Also, during your thirties, most parents are saving for their own children's college education and this could be difficult to accomplish with Landon's career path and Julie not working.
If you watched their vlog We Have Answers || Life Update (5/4/18), Landon said he had received his acceptance letter and I felt this was for the grad program. There is a lot of justifying Landon's years in school by Julie that you can see at the end of this video. Also, he applied for several jobs during this time, didn't get any of them and Julie was surprised he wasn't hired. I'm not sure what type of jobs he applied for...
