Oh yes please...ship on off to the disaster area that hasn't ever seen this type of death and destruction EVER. You don't need to speak the language...it's okay. Everyone wants to hear about how to get into Heaven right about now anyway....Best.Mission.Ever.

This is the facebook group to the area where he will be. It's nice to know that all the current missionaries are "accounted for" like they posted yesterday...

For the love of pete, I still can't seem to post screen shots, I keep getting an error message. Anyone that wants to follow that link I posted and see some of the current missionaries photos in his region standing in knee-high (to an adult sized person-it's thigh high to one of the kids in the pic) standing water with a bicycle and a gigantic smile on the guys face with an emergency vest on with his LDS Name badge attached to that emergency vest. Yes, that's helpful. I am sure the locals are rejoicing that they missionaries are still attempting to ride their bikes in flood waters to spread the word....

And serving a mission isn't "leaving the normal path" for a Mormon boy. It's very expected.

As far as the typhoon goes and the timing, he won't be going to Japan right away. He'll be spending at least 8 weeks at the training center learning Japanese and how to be a good missionary. So he won't be heading to Japan until after the initial crisis is over.

But agreed, the Japanese don't need Jesus. Personal: I had a friend who was an Episcopalian missionary. He was sent to convert a particular tribe. After he got to know the people, he gave up. He said they didn't need Christianity because their religion was already based on a loving deity and being kind to each other.

There's a MTC in Utah-- at least one. They're super restricted. When Shay Butler's brother Logan was there, he was allowed one phone call on Christmas.
Edit: here's a link. They wouldn't just send them out. Gotta indoctrinate them and make sure they are "worthy" first.

I don’t think it makes me feel any better. It’s just a giant indoctrination place. 8 weeks of full force brainwashing before being sent out into the world to try and convert people. I really find the whole religious missionary process sick. They could do 2 years with the peace corp or similar instead and spend their time making an actual impact.

Why doesn’t he skip the training and the mission and go out first and foremost to do some humanitarian work out there when they are in need - you know some service, like all the other Mormon vloggers remind us they’re so good at doing.
From my own perspective carrying out a mission, should be as much about service as evangelism. You are not there necessarily to convert people by preaching at them. You are there to show people how your faith can make a difference in your life and theirs. What better way to do so than by offering service. The majority of Christian outreach will be to do just that.

Oh yes please, Tiger...don't misunderstand...I still don't agree with the basis of going on a "Mission." I just didn't realize it involved training, I literally thought they assigned a missionary a location and off they go..... The whole system seems outdated. I can MAYBE see YEARS ago when you wanted to recruit people to your cult...I mean, "religion," that you would need to deploy foot soldiers to spread the word...but in this day and age when you have all the resources and advantages of the internet...who wants a knock at their door? Go away.

Yeah I dont really like the whole missionary idea. I feel like they are patrolling the streets looking for sinners to convert to mormonism. I personally as a Christian do not feel the need to go up to people and preach to them about religion and this and that. I dont pressure anyone nor do I go knocking on peoples doors like Jehovah’s Witness do. Its all just not my vibe and I don’t think the way to get people to follow Christ is to go to their country and bombard them with the word.

Mormons don't do actual humanitarian work. They consider going door to door to be a great and necessary service.

I will say that they will help you out around the house, though. My neighbors have conned a local group into doing yard work, digging out her old sewer line, and just ALL sorts of stuff around their house. They are not mormons, they just asked for the help and those poor boys were like "Of course!" They've brought them groceries before, too.

I agree SO much! Why not go dig wells in Africa, or join Doctors Without Borders? They must use non-medical personnel as well as MDs and RNs. There are tons of service organizations that just go help people.
Or why not take a course like surgical tech, and then go volunteer? I have a friend who is a surgical tech, and she goes at least once a year with a group that sets up mobile hospitals in underserved areas and provides surgeries for people.
It really irks me how they pat themselves on the backs for "doing service" when all they are really doing is proselytizing.

SNT41007 wrote: Mon Oct 14, 2019 5:59 am It will be interesting to hear about how open the people of Japan are to being "taught" about Jesus Christ while they are searching for their missing family members, burying their dead, and picking up what's left of their homes after this typhoon. After riding out Irma a few years ago and the damage we sustained, if a missionary came up to me and handed me a pamphlet about Jesus' love and asked to talk to me about it, I would have handed them a hammer, given them some shingles and asked them to be more useful in other ways....or, depending on the time of day (it was exhausting) slapped them in the face and told them that I don't want to hear about how much God loves me if he treats our family the way he just treated them by destroying homes and lives. The last thing that area of the world needs right now is more mouths to feed...not to mention unsanitary conditions in the flooding. From what I understand that typhoon hit right about where Elijah was assigned. You can't just put on your mormon rose colored glasses (literally, for Megan...) and say that "God will provide." I will honestly be quite surprised if Elijah's trip isn't postponed, even for a few weeks.
I would HOPE that they would be doing some actual SERVICE and physically helping with the clean up, but let’s be honest...

I think it was a photo book to send with him, so I presume she skipped adding a photo of him for him. Of course, he seems very into himself, so maybe he would have liked a book full of himself. 🤷‍♀️
