Megan controls what comes in and out of that house. Sure, the kids are free to pursue what they want in terms of hobbies, but I'd lay good odds that they are not shown options Megan and Mike don't approve of. If one of the kids showed an interest in something completely off the wall, Megan would lose her shit in a hot minute.
The kids read the books she brings home. They learn to play with the instruments she brings home. They get to play with the toys she finds at thrift stores. They get to do "home projects" that she approves of and wants done.
