8 Passengers: Spreading a Disease while Doing As I Please | Part #16
Re: 8 Passengers: Spreading a Disease while Doing As I Please | Part #16
Not that important of a thing to talk about but I'm actually really surprised that they're allowed to watch the Simpsons. I mean I went to school with as girl whos family was religious who was basically only able to watch Disney/nick and veggie tales. The girls were also not allowed to listen tot he spice girls because they were too sexy (I'm guessing??). I'm suddenly thinking R & k are more normal than I thought.

Lots of adults don't know how to cook! Or at least they are not interested in learning so they never bother. I'm pretty sure my dad has never made a meal more complicated than spaghetti his entire life. He even pretends he doesn't know how to grocery shop for ingredients, only convenience food. But he gets away with it because he's a man. Some people are afraid of learning how to cook because the people who eat the food will be overly critical of it. I've known plenty of people who have a fear of cooking.imoverit wrote: ↑Fri Apr 10, 2020 8:30 am Yes, I am happy to agree to place the blame on Ruby and Kevin because Kevin is too lazy to teach his kids any life skill and Ruby is clearly a poor cook, but for a 17 year old I stand by the opinion that she should know how to cook better. But no it's probably not Shari's fault, and she seems to show an interest in preparing food, so hopefully she will be able to slowly teach herself (which is also what I had to do). I guess I should clarify that my criticisms of her are more of a reflection of her parents and what basic skills they neglect to exemplify and teach their kids.
It's crazy this family has a cookbook.
Shari makes her own lunches and she will survive, even if she messes up sometimes and has to make sandwiches for a lot of her meals.
All colleges and dorms are different, but from my experience most freshmen and sophomores don't even have access to a full kitchen and are lucky if they have access to a microwave or personal refrigerator. Most of them just eat in the dining halls.

I don't know about school in the USA, but I learned through school when I started home economics in 5th grade. We studied home economics until 8th grade. Do you have that subject in the US? It covers basics in cleaning, cooking, washing and hygiene with food, etc. I learned things from there that my parent failed to teach me.

This is very nit picky of me but it bothers me how public they, and all Mormons for that matter, are about fasting. I was raised in an extremely catholic home and we were told to never tell people we are fasting (except the no meat on Friday cause that’s more of a public fact) because Matthew 6:16-18 states:
“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
I’m not religious at all anymore and maybe it’s just my upbringing but it always bothers me how they feel the need to state it in their posts.

They're the same about tithing and charity. All the "look! We're tithing!" and making sure they show their kids tithing when they get paid for grades or money on birthdays, and showing off charitable acts. In the same passage, the Bible says not to brag about good works, and to not let your right hand know what your left hand is doing. It's not just Mormon vloggers though. Sav and Cole Labrant do that too.Trip804 wrote:This is very nit picky of me but it bothers me how public they, and all Mormons for that matter, are about fasting. I know many people have already said this but I'm just gonna say that sometimes Shari can be a bit full of herself, but she is trying to learn how to cook. I'm 17 and the biggest reason why I'm able to cook is because of my parents who have taught me. Shari clearly doesn't have the same luxury of two good parents to guide her through cooking different healthy meals/snacks etc. On the other hand, it's TRUE she can learn on youtube without the help of her useless parents, and since she now seems eager to learn how to cook, I'm sure she'll learn.

In my opinion it's the ones who are Christians to get more out of it than just being saved. They want to get pat's on the back for all they do, and that is a no, no, and does not count as a good deed in the end, as you've done it to get reaction.lmmomSD wrote: ↑Fri Apr 10, 2020 11:59 amThey're the same about tithing and charity. We had home economics when I was in 7th grade, but that was over 20 years ago. I assume they still have it, especially in Utah where girls are expected to become housewives. But we learned to make things like microwave hot chocolate...no joke. Nothing practical.Namm wrote: ↑Fri Apr 10, 2020 11:21 am

At 17 I could boil water to make pasta. I could make scrambled eggs, grilled cheese and anything that came from a box like Mac and cheese. I was also into baking and could bake cookies and brownies from scratch. But you couldn’t ask me how to roast or broil anything. We expect ALOT from kids these days and all the Franke kids are kids who weren’t taught much from their parents. I remember a few times Shari and Ruby saying that Shari had to force Ruby to read to her. Which is something my mom did to me all the time. Yet we expect Shari to know how to cook like she has anyone to look up to who could be there and teach her the basic necessities of life.
Also it looks like Ruby took Shari on a trip? I didn’t watch the whole vlog but really? During a time like this?

I learned to bake cakes bread and make pizza. My parents never made these types of foods so it was amazing for me. It was a real subject with grades and all.
Re: 8 Passengers: Spreading a Disease while Doing As I Please | Part #16
I'm from the UK. At 17 I could cook quite a few things (meat bolognaise, chicken curry, bread, shortcrust pastry, cakes, rice, pasta, vegetables, roux based sauces..) mainly anything except roasting things BUT I enjoyed cooking, my parents let me from a young age and I have a disabled mum. She can't stand and do the cooking/ gardening/ DIY but knows how so we've always done things under instruction. Or had to do basic meals when she's unwell. We also didn't have the money for takeaways but did have a car (due to my mum) so could get good deals on food.
At 19 I moved to uni with people who couldn't cook anything except where you put it in the oven (chicken nuggets, frozen pizza...), no clue how to cook vegetables and literally set fire to pasta! The same happened when my brother's moved out, we were always the only ones who could cook. We were also in scouts and had to cook on camps.
Shari, Abby, Julie know how to make bread which is quite impressive IMO? Soft white rolls! I think it just shows where they have and haven't been taught. Same with Chad,he cooked loads in Arizona but doesn't now.
Also they seem to not have fresh food much? They also think chicken is only for people working out?! I think I general the USA has a lot less fresh food that is affordable (?) and the Franke family/ Griffith's generally eat extra strangely. That's not an environment where you learn to cook.
Plus side if Shari does dietetics then she'll learn a lot about meals?! In the UK at least a dietician is a registered profession (everything from tube feeding to allergies to eating disorders and soft diet etc) whereas anyone can say they are a dietician and it doesn't in itself mean anything.

On the cooking issue I would say I'm a good cook, but I've never broiled anything. The fact that Shari doesn't can't automatically draw criticism that she 'can't cook', especially as she was literally learning how to in the video.
I haven't seen Ruby cooking very often, and I get the impression that she used to cook and has stopped bothering in the last year or two. It's difficult for Shari to learn without being shown.

i'm also uk based, and was never allowed to even attempt to learn to cook at home
like i mean i'd never even boiled an egg
i spent the whole year before i went to uni stressing about how i was going to feed myself, then when i got there it really wasn't so bad
most people were in a similar boat to me (maybe not as extreme lol) but ultimately some of my best memories from uni are from learning to cook with various people that i met along the way
the kids that wanted to learn how to cook, learned to cook pretty quickly, the ones that didn't just lived on pizza and noddles
don't get me wrong, ruby and kevin definitely should have taught her how to cook by now, but i think shari will do just fine, she's used to having to step up and get good at things quickly and she wants to learn

I’m sorry, but I’m not buying for one second that Shari has read 15 books. & how convenient that she didn’t want to share them all.

Does anyone else find it a bit strange how much in this totally nice and new house Ruby wants to remodel? It might be just me and the fact that my family never did any remodeling growing up but like with her laundry room, it's a beautiful and perfectly functional room, yet she wants to rip everything out just for such minor changes. For me if there was a shelf in a funky position I'd just think ah yeah that's just how it is. I guess to me it just seems like a rich/entitled attitude to have. She's passing it on to her kids too, Shari was saying she wants her bathroom remodeled, but it is also perfectly new and nice looking to me. I think Ruby needs to do a better job of showing the kids how to be grateful with what they have, but she needs to learn that herself first.

I might be looking it from another perspective
culturally. I've noticed that cooking in the USA is different from many other countries and how we preseve food. Maybe it's to much, to early to expect that from an American teen.
I just realised that if she's supposed to move out at 18 and get married somehow inbetween and live on her own I think it's in her own interest to learn but she can eat microwaved food also it's not a must to cook but then, she wants healthy food.

I hope she’s ready to leave.
I’m quite disappointed that she chose to go to BYU where her father teaches and it’s surrounded by all Mormon people.
I don’t even think it’s a good school.
If she’s so brilliant why not take SATs? Why not aim for Ivy League? Her parents can afford it for sure!
She could have BYU as her safe a school but aim to go Ivy League or some other great non Ivy League school. Idk.
I feel that if she went out of her Mormon bubble she could choose her life path being better informed. Like truly have a choice.
If she goes to BYU she is just going to get married and have many children and be a vlogger (who knows for how long YT will be a thing) and repeat all the same mistakes of her mother and grand mother and so on.
I’m disappointed. She should be brilliant.

I’m disappointed. She should be brilliant.[/quote]She talks a big game about going to NYU for law school. But in the end she made the safe choice to stay in her bubble. And Ruby said Shari had read "all the books for a first year law student", which I call BS on as well. Maybe she read some list that's recommended for people who want to go to law school. But not "all the books read by first year law students". Sure she could read 14 books in 15 days. But I guarantee they weren't War and Peace. Ruby likes to brag about how smart Shari is, but she doesn't want her to actually use her brains.
And I don't think she will end up in law school, because critical thinking is so discouraged in their family. Ruby is already planning on grandkids in just a few years. Shari is brainwashed, and will probably marry some returning missionary and start popping out babies. I hope I'm wrong, but I doubt it.
