I was wondering the exact same thing. Especially now that she's doing homeschool and seems to be taking a lot of AP classes, while also working out everyday and doing household chores and looking after her siblings. When school is in session, I hardly ever read for fun and if I do it takes a week or two to get through one book because I just don't have time. I'm guessing she's probably just skimming the books and not retaining anything. For someone as smart as she claims to be, her discussion of her favorite books was really lacking in details. She didn't even say what The Devils Advocate was about, just talked about the cover, even though its supposedly her favorite book, and she seemed much more concerned with pointing out how big her books were or how other people who aren't as intelligent as her wouldn't care about the books she reads. All her siblings did a much better job summarizing their books and why they liked them. Even if she did read 15 books in 14 days, why have to bring it up on camera and make people who are struggling to stay active in quarantine feel bad?

I’m quite disappointed that she chose to go to BYU where her father teaches and it’s surrounded by all Mormon people.
I don’t even think it’s a good school.
If she’s so brilliant why not take SATs? Why not aim for Ivy League? Her parents can afford it for sure!
She could have BYU as her safe a school but aim to go Ivy League or some other great non Ivy League school. Idk.
I feel that if she went out of her Mormon bubble she could choose her life path being better informed. Like truly have a choice.
If she goes to BYU she is just going to get married and have many children and be a vlogger (who knows for how long YT will be a thing) and repeat all the same mistakes of her mother and grand mother and so on.
I’m disappointed. She should be brilliant.[/quote]She talks a big game about going to NYU for law school. But in the end she made the safe choice to stay in her bubble. And Ruby said Shari had read "all the books for a first year law student", which I call BS on as well. Maybe she read some list that's recommended for people who want to go to law school. But not "all the books read by first year law students". Sure she could read 14 books in 15 days. But I guarantee they weren't War and Peace. Ruby likes to brag about how smart Shari is, but she doesn't want her to actually use her brains.
And I don't think she will end up in law school, because critical thinking is so discouraged in their family. Ruby is already planning on grandkids in just a few years. Shari is brainwashed, and will probably marry some returning missionary and start popping out babies. I hope I'm wrong, but I doubt it.

Since she has been at private school she has struggled and her grades have gone down. She is definitely not as smart as they use to brag about. And Ruby has said in the past that they will not be helping the kids pay for college.

I've read that many books during holidays if I haven't had anything else to do. Especially if they are YA fiction etc, you can finish them easily in a day.apmfacebook93 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 12, 2020 7:08 am I’m sorry, but I’m not buying for one second that Shari has read 15 books. & how convenient that she didn’t want to share them all.

They won't be helping the kids pay for college, but those kids bought that nice house and paid for the upscale vacations the adults have taken.
Notice that the kids only get to go on road trips, except for the trip to NZ that Abby took with Kevin. Oh, and the Disney trip with the Orgills that was used for content. Kevin and Ruby have been to Italy, the UK and the BVI.
Really fair.

While it’s great that Shari is spending her time reading, the speed at which she is reading these books means she’s probably not fully understanding or retaining what she reads. Lord of the flies is relatively easy plot wise but Shari has probably missed a lot of the messages and themes. How fast she reads isn’t a good measure of her intelligence, but what she actually understands. It’s also funny how she has an elitist perspective on books but she actually dislikes so many of the much loved classics. To Kill a Mockingbird is a well loved classic and the fact Shari says she hates it means she might not truly understand what some books are about and only take them at face value. It does no good to speed through a book in a day If you don’t actually take anything away from it after you finish.

She _hates_ To Kill a Mockingbird?
Wow. How can anyone hate that? It's about standing up for what is right, even when others pressure you to cave. Sorry for being Captain Obvious, but I just don't understand. I dislike Faulkner because reading him gets exhausting, (all those parentheses, lol) but I wouldn't say I "hate" anything he's written. And she is definitely reading short books. Lord of the Flies and To Kill a Mockingbird are both relatively short books.

I thought it was interesting that one of the books that Eve read wasn't Jared's two books. Bonnie made a point of advertising for them on IG.

I was just about to say the only classics I haven’t enjoyed were Faulkner before I read this post.lmmomSD wrote:She _hates_ To Kill a Mockingbird?

I’m surprised she hadn’t read those books before as well. Both of them were part of my 8th or 9th grade curriculum.

The latest vlog with the dog. Reminds me of 8passengers, I could be reaching. I remember Ruby calling out other vloggers for copying her content. But she would never dare to say anything about Leroys.

I do believe that you can read a lot of books when there's nothing else to do but her sounds suspicious especially that thick one.

I don’t think it’s impossible. If I’m at the beach, I can knock a book out each day. But I don’t believe Shari did it with that size of books at home with everything else she’s doing. Plus, she showed zero comprehension of the books she shared and claimed to have read.Alycat_2001_uk wrote:I've read that many books during holidays if I haven't had anything else to do. I just realised Shari isn't smarter than the average 16-17 year old. College is going to be a wake up call for her.
Her mother has fed her ego for years and made her believe that she is "beyond that" smart, just so Ruby can smothly get away with using Shari as a substitute parent. Instead of building a confident girl, Ruby and Kevin have created a delusional arrogant bossy young girl. A young girl who believes she knows everything in all aspects of life. The airport incident and the way she used to bully Julie are two good examples.
I don't think Shari is much smarter than Chad and Julie is not far behind, not even Abbie anymore.
There's nothing wrong with Shari by the way but I feel fooled because I bought their nonsense about her being smarter than everyone for years.

Re: 8 Passengers: Spreading a Disease while Doing As I Please | Part #16
I couldn't possibly count them, being an adult who has always read a lot. Sometimes I'll start reading in the morning and read all day, with only breaks for food. If she's doing the same then it's believable. At uni we would have about two novels a week to read, and they would often be fairly weighty.Namm wrote: ↑Sun Apr 12, 2020 12:49 pmHow many books have you read ?Alycat_2001_uk wrote: ↑Sun Apr 12, 2020 11:15 amI've read that many books during holidays if I haven't had anything else to do. As others have commented on her not liking TKAMB - I really disliked it too. It made me feel very helpless - at the end of the day their goodness still doesn't make things right. In uni when we discussed classics there would always be at least one person who disliked each novel.
I was sad that Julie clearly had a book in her hands that she never talked about on camera. I assume it was cut to make room for Ruby to try and explain the plot of a book that she hasn't even read.

Me too. I was definitely expecting that. I wonder how E&J felt about that. It's nice to see her kids read and not watch tv and YouTube videos all day like Bonnie's kids do.sheltiefan wrote: ↑Sun Apr 12, 2020 11:54 am I thought it was interesting that one of the books that Eve read wasn't Jared's two books. Shari did say she didn't want to go to college too far from home. As far as BYU is concerned, she will get quite a discount because dad works there. Did Ruby really say that they won't be paying for their kid's college even with the discount?

Re: 8 Passengers: Spreading a Disease while Doing As I Please | Part #16
Shari will get a 50% discount off the LDS member tuition. Maybe Ruby feels that the discount is their contribution?
I can see how TKAMB would make one feel as though one family's goodness is useless in the face of all the evil in the world. But something tells me that isn't why Shari "hated" it. The lack of empathy in her extended family leads me to believe that she doesn't understand why Atticus would defend Tom, or what he means when he tells Scout she needs to walk around in another person's skin to understand them. Maybe I'm wrong. But a book that espouses empathy and talks about the evils of racism seems like it would be lost on Shari, whose family doesn't value empathy, and who lives in a very white bubble.

Re: 8 Passengers: Spreading a Disease while Doing As I Please | Part #16
I relate to Shari a lot. I used to think I was smart and everyone told me I was smart. Turns out I'm actually just academic/good at school, which doesn't necessarily indicate intelligence. However, I found out college played right into my strengths and I excelled at it because I figured out the big secret: do the work and do it on time. I watched many students struggle because they thought they didn't have to do the work since they had no one to be accountable for, and then struggle to cram for tests. I did the work as it was given, then studied an hour or two for the test to review the materials, and I flew through most of my classes. I was also good at writing essays and wrote those on time as well, usually starting them at least a week before they were due, and never stayed up all night to complete an assignment because I didn't have to. I know some people genuinely struggle and may have learning disorders even though they do all these things, so I'm not referring to them; I'm referring to students who simply lack the drive or motivation to go to all their classes and complete assignments on time.Namm wrote: ↑Sun Apr 12, 2020 1:42 pm I just realised Shari isn't smarter than the average 16-17 year old. Shari probably does all these things already and if she keeps it up at college, she will do fine. Plus, she is not going to have a wake-up call at BYU because there are no parties or drugs on campus, no pressure to have pre-marital sex, etc. I think she will be more sheltered there than she would at almost any other school. Unfortunately, yeah, she will probably never escape her bubble. I'm sure it's difficult to do so.
