Averette is a VA Baptist college, Georgetown University is a DC Jesuit College, BYU is a Utah Mormon college, University of Michigan is a large state university and Harvard is a private prestigious university. I wonder which one she is really thinking about attending.

Is she a good enough student to get into Harvard? If she can get in, Harvard or Georgetown would be great, if for no other reason than getting out of her bubble and being in a more diverse, urban setting. I have a feeling that a Virginia Baptist college will probably be pretty homogeneous.Ducklings4 wrote:Averette is a VA Baptist college, Georgetown University is a DC Jesuit College, BYU is a Utah Mormon college, University of Michigan is a large state university and Harvard is a private prestigious university. Shari's video was a good idea and could be really helpful. I think who Kevin is as a human just ruined it... and the dad parts weren't funny. I am really excited to see her go through the college app process. I hope she doesn't stress herself out terribly over it, especially since she'll most likely end up at BYU anyway. It really is probably the most stressful time of life up to that point for most students with trying to balance everything. I didn't even start thinking about college til fall of senior year so she's already reeaally dragging it out a long time and might get sick of the whole thing.
I wonder if those colleges she put onto that ad thing are actually the ones she's interested in... she sure is confident that she's getting into BYU, would be very awkward if she didn't. Hopefully she's got a safety just in case.

I disagree. I'm sure Kevin would love to flaunt off his 4.0 Shari around to his colleagues and other students and hold her up as an example of what other freshmen should be like. He definitely comes off as that cocky dad who likes to brag about his children (even though he literally did nothing for their upbringing as kids as an absentee parent).LilaRose wrote: ↑Thu May 14, 2020 1:13 pmI watched the video and I felt that all the Dad answers were meant very jokingly, so I didn't get the feeling at all that Kevin wants Shari to stay close to home.emma2948 wrote: ↑Thu May 14, 2020 11:39 amThat's great and all but I wonder what lengths Kevin and Ruby will go to to prevent that from happening. In Shari's new college video (she asks Kevin a bunch of questions regarding college) and one of the questions she asks is what is the most important thing to consider when choosing colleges to apply to, to which Kevin responds, "Picking a college that is closest to home as you can possibly get is most important." . So clearly Ruby and Kevin do not want Shari to grow outside of her mormon/mountain culture and are gonna do whatever possible to manipulate her to make sure she goes to BYU. There's no doubt she'll be attending BYU, and she has her parents to thank for that.

I strongly disagree. Even when he went back to professor mode, he said something along the lines of "You also need to consider whether or not you culturally fit in and enjoy that feeling on that particular campus." So clearly he's hoping that Shari stays in Utah at BYU (or at the very least The University of Utah) so that she doesn't get out of the mountain/mormon culture that they have there. I feel like he's wording himself in such a way that says, "Shari, if you move out of state, you won't culturally fit in, thus I advise you NOT to do that."LilaRose wrote: ↑Thu May 14, 2020 1:13 pmI watched the video and I felt that all the Dad answers were meant very jokingly, so I didn't get the feeling at all that Kevin wants Shari to stay close to home.emma2948 wrote: ↑Thu May 14, 2020 11:39 amThat's great and all but I wonder what lengths Kevin and Ruby will go to to prevent that from happening. They haven't said anything about helping the kids out with college (even though yes, the kids are the reason they make most of their money), so I assume they are kicking them out at 18 with whatever money the kids have on their own.Happy+Charlie wrote: ↑Thu May 14, 2020 1:16 pmKevin and Ruby are unbelievable if they are going to coarse/manipulate Shari to pick BYU since it is closer to home, considering it sounds like she is on her own as far as paying for room and board after she turns 18. I know others on here comment that Shari will learn once she is in a dorm and living with others, but I don't think she expects to be in a dorm. She is already collecting things for a kitchen, so I'm guessing she will be in an apartment. I may be wrong, but seems she is setting herself up to be in something with more than just a bedroom and common areas. Also, has anyone else picked upon whether Ruby and Kevin cover college or the kids are on their own with it. Only thing I see wrong if they don't help is when will these kids get compensated for all the appearances on YouTube.emma2948 wrote: ↑Thu May 14, 2020 11:39 amThat's great and all but I wonder what lengths Kevin and Ruby will go to to prevent that from happening. I'm not from the states but I do have American friends who say that in order to get into those top ivy leagues you need to be very academically inclined with a few but very well directed extracurriculars (so your not mediocre at everything, but you need to be pretty good at a couple things), as well as some volunteer experience, to brag about on your application.lmmomSD wrote: ↑Thu May 14, 2020 1:33 pmIs she a good enough student to get into Harvard? This is just my personal opinion so please don't attack me:
1) While Shari does seem like a very smart kid who cares a lot about school, there have been a few times where she simply couldn't care enough to study (which I totally understand, I'm a student myself and I also get too lazy to study). These times she ended up saying she failed the tests (saying she got 60% in those few chemistry tests/ math tests etc.) but she never really fully dealt with the consequences of doing bad on an exam, since her teachers seem to inflate her grades when she does do bad. As a result, she only got 3 A-minuses this year. But again, that's largely due to the fact that when she did completely bomb a test, her teachers would participate in a little activity known as grade inflation. (The teacher would just add on another test and give the entire class 100% to boost the entire class average.) So Shari's grades for some of her classes aren't always accurate.
2) Her extracurriculars (from what I've seen in her YouTube videos) it seems that she participated in a ton of different sports, which is great. But other then that, she didn't really seem to do much else at school.
3) Her volunteering: Honestly, I never heard of Shari participating in any volunteering activities at all. I mean she was planning on going to Ghana (possibly to do some volunteer work) but unfortunately that doesn't seem like it will happen due to the whole coronavirus situation not cooling down enough.
4) I think it might help if she had some sort of "wow" factor on her application. It seems that Harvard and a ton of other Ivy Leagues love to accept students who had a bit of a rough past who were able to overcome it and become the person they are today. But being a rich, privileged white girl who lives in Utah doesn't sound like the "wow" factor that Harvard or other Ivy League universities are looking for. Of course, this aspect of your application isn't nearly the most important, since there are a ton of well off rich kids who did get accepted by Harvard, so it's not the be-all end all of her application.
Again, this is just my opinion, feel free to agree or disagree with it.

BYU has a 67-69% acceptance rate, depending on which website you look at. So it's not _that_ hard to get in. Harvard has a 5% acceptance rate. Shari is much more likely to get into BYU than Harvard. Plus, I'll bet if it came down to it, Kevin could pull some strings.

Harvard is a longshot in my opinion. She's not nearly as smart as she thinks she is, so if she were to get into Harvard, I think it would be due to her YouTube fame more than anything. I went to an extremely competitive public school (top 10 in my state and in the top 100 in the country) and the two kids from my school who got into Harvard had higher than a 4.0, perfect SAT scores, 5s on all APs, and were taking college math courses while in high school because they already had taken BC calc during junior year. We had a lot of kids get into Ivies, but Harvard and Princeton were both very tough to get into. Granted, that was over a decade ago.lmmomSD wrote: ↑Thu May 14, 2020 1:33 pmIs she a good enough student to get into Harvard? Still, every time Shari talks about how smart she is, it strikes me that she's incredibly sheltered. She doesn't know what smart means in some high schools. She would have been middle of the pack at my high school at best. Liking school is different than being smart.

I have a feeling Shari picked those schools for the sponsorship video, not because she's actually considering them. They are all (except Averette, never heard of it) obvious choices for someone who wants to go to a prestigious university. She may even apply to some of them just to see if she can get in, but I doubt she'll really consider any of them except BYU.
Re: 8 Passengers: Spreading a Disease while Doing As I Please | Part #16
Towards the end of the video, she mentioned that she plans to go to a college that’s 15 minutes away (obviously referring to BYU).
She definitely picked the other colleges for the ad, with no intention of applying to them.

But its true tho, you have to see if you like the campus, the location of the campus, the culture of the campus etc. As a person of color currently in college (that I really don't like btw) I wanted to go to a HBCU with a medium sized campus that was far enough away from my state that I had to fend for myself and close enough to where I still had a support system, and obviously one I could afford. I ended up going to a HUGE PWI, in state and like I said I hate it here. Listen, no matter what the culture of a college campus, what denomination the people are, what ethnicity they are etc. there's always going to be people for everyone, Shari wants to study abroad, there's that in most every college, she doesn't like drinking/doing drugs? no ones going to force her, she can hang out with the people who don't like drinking or doing drugs.emma2948 wrote: ↑Thu May 14, 2020 3:04 pmI strongly disagree. That's great and all but I wonder what lengths Kevin and Ruby will go to to prevent that from happening. At the end of the day little things are important to picking a college, how the tours are conducted, how financial aid treats you/how professional they are, right down to the location. You don't want to take three busses and a train just to go to the city because your college is in the middle of nowhere, that may be good for someone else but not good for others, vise versa with a college like George Washington in DC. Its not Kevin and Ruby controlling her and saying "stay" its the truth, he's stating facts (and I'd never thought I'd be defending R&K)
EX: I (a black female) wouldn't fit in the culture of a predominately white mormon Utah college culture
BTW: HBCU=Historically Black College/University
PWI=Predominantly White Institution

Okay, Ruby's instagram story about the face masks really annoyed me. Tbh I'm surprised they were wearing masks at all (or maybe they were given masks when they got to the appointment). But then Ruby kept pulling hers down and touching her face.. which kind of defeats the purpose of wearing it!

Seriously what was that! Pulling her mask down just so she could film an insta story? The entitlement is unreal.

Ugh, please tell me they are not going to start doing podcasts with just the two of them. I have seen other Youtube vloggers try to do these podcast things, like April and Davey and Our Family Nest, and they are always massive failures, barely getting any views compared to their vlogs and I could never watch more than a minute of them. No one watches 8 Passengers for her and Kevin, and especially not for her 'life coaching'. Just ridiculous that they think they're going to succeed with this. Side note, don't they usually upload on Fridays? No video yet, unless they're just late.Alycat_2001_uk wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2020 8:30 amMaybe show some care and compassion to your own family before dishing out your rubbish to strangers.
