Re: 8 Passengers: Emotional Abuse Galore & Making Kids Sleep on The Floor | Part 17
I thought it was weird that Shari was bragging about all the easy classes she's taking this year. She made sure to gloat, "No AP classes". I know it's her senior year, but for someone who's so set on being the model student and going to college, you'd think she'd try to do a little extra for it. I used my senior year to take 3 AP classes to get my GPA high enough to graduate salutatorian, earned tons of college credits, and did a bunch of other stuff to build up my resume. Colleges won't deny you admission for having an easy senior year, of course, but using your senior year to get used to what it will be like in college is a good idea and shows initiative. Taking weightlifting four times a week, taking health, and taking the easiest math class? Boy, she's going to be in for a rude awakening at college after that schedule.
I see Ruby finally let Chad bleach his hair like he wanted to. I bet she read on here all of us criticizing her for not letting him bleach his hair because they supposedly don't have enough money. And what is this? Vlog #10 about Abby's acne? Chad and Shari have (or had) as bad acne as Abby, so I don't get what Ruby's focus on Abby is about. What 14 year old wants the whole world seeing her acne routines and treatment?

Boy Shari is pimping her wisdom teeth removal videos...watch me high...see me drugged. Get real! That’s ridiculous, you had a procedure and received meds..stop with all the nonsense little girl. Quit trying to act cool...it’s not.

BYU isn't that hard to get into. They have a 64% acceptance rate. They probably have a diversity program because not many POC want to go there. Plus, having her dad teach there will help.

No matter what she is going to byu and if she somehow doesn't get in she will have her dad find a illegal loophole in order to get in. I don't think her parents want her going anywhere that isn't affiliated with Mormons somehow.lmmomSD wrote:BYU isn't that hard to get into. They have a 64% acceptance rate. I stopped watching when Shari put her shoes on the kitchen counter. That's disgusting

She already said she is going there. She got a good enough SAT (or ACT) score to get accepted. She also said she didn't want to go to school too far from home so...

I think that was just a excuse and her parents want her to be close by and for her to go to a Mormon college.ba1006 wrote:She already said she is going there. She got a good enough SAT (or ACT) score to get accepted. She also said she didn't want to go to school too far from home so...

BYU doesn’t really see AP classes as superior to regular level classes and taking AP won’t give you any extra college credit like some colleges do. Back in the day when applying, someone we knew actually sat down with admissions and they recommended it was better to take a regular class and get an A than do an AP class and get a B+ or worse. And that wasn’t the first time we had heard that. I also have a family member who is a professor at BYU and not all their kids got in. A few years ago it became known that it was easier to get accepted when applying to start summer semester instead of the traditional fall start. Now that it is well known, that is no longer the case and summer semester has become just as competitive. It’s also been said out of state applicants have a greater chance being accepted than those who live in UT, although I’ve never really seen any data to suggest that is legit.

Ooh, can you ask your relative how much weight is given to being the child of BYU staff? Is a decent ACT and GPA enough? I saw so many posts of people with academic qualifications much better than Shari who were rejected, that her her senior yr choices seemed reckless to me. Especially if she wants a shot at any competitive schools.Cali15 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 20, 2020 1:41 pm BYU doesn’t really see AP classes as superior to regular level classes and taking AP won’t give you any extra college credit like some colleges do. Interesting that they don't care about AP classes. Every website/post detailing what you need to be competitive for BYU claims the opposite. Just goes to show you what a crap shoot college admissions really is. Back in the olden days (2000's), we were told that a B in an AP was worth more than an A in a grade level course, because it showed motivation to challenge oneself and ability to achieve at college level. Both were counted as a 4.0 in your GPA, while an A in remedial HS math only showed you can do remedial HS math.

I've seen the Griffiths' Gals kids sit on the counter and walk on it too, so this doesn't surprise me at all. Said it before and I'll say it again, hygiene isn't a priority, especially with Ruby. They take these trips/reunions where they have access to showers (RV and later the Bear Lake rental) and Ruby goes 4 days without taking a shower. And let's not even get into her nasty, greasy hair.

I grew up LDS and actually BYU is more challenging to get into than one would think. Not only do they look at your grades and SAT results, but members of the church are considered higher priority in the application process than non members and your church standing affects whether or not you get in. Now if thats not bad enough they also look at your family's standing as well which I personally think is ridiculous. LDS kids are expected to apply and get in to BYU. If they don't get accepted at BYU-Utah they usually get into BYU-Idaho or what used to be called Ricks.

I was wondering about this today as I watched This Is How We Bingham’s video of them moving their teenage daughter into BYU dorms. So I watched the video of her getting accepted and they were saying BYU is a hard school to get into. They said their daughter worked extremely hard throughout high school hoping to get into BYU.
I haven’t seen Shari work hard since she started at the private school.

BYU is pretty competitive, but one of the main reasons for that is that the majority of their applicants are white middle class Mormons from big families who attend church, often all do the same extracurricular activities, have hours of volunteer work, attend seminary, Eagle Scout, planning on going on a mission etc. It’s just really hard to stand out. Recently in the last 3-4 years BYU made a huge change to their application. Back when I applied a lot of it entailed just checking off the boxes that apply to you (like are you an Eagle Scout, attend seminary, school leadership positions, etc) Now the application is majorly essay-based, you can no longer just a check box and say I did it, instead you have to be creative in incorporating what you were involved in and accomplishments via your essaysKattiness Everdeen wrote:Ooh, can you ask your relative how much weight is given to being the child of BYU staff? As for the family member, we’re not really on speaking terms so can only kind of guess about the situation. Their kids are very smart, like next level, sometimes they talk about something so intelligent it goes right over my head. But again it’s one of those things where it can be hard to stand out amongst your peers there, sometimes really good grades (and in this case a parent teaching there) isn’t going to sell and BYU rarely gives in no matter who you are or know and they don’t care to hear your sob story or begging to be given a chance. I think the only kids who may have a higher chance of being accepted is a large donation or funding of a building/program from a family member but I’m sure that’s the case for a lot of colleges.
I graduated high school with a fairly large group of kids who were Mormon. There were about 15 of us and if I remember correctly, only 4-5 of us got accepted. That year it seemed ACT and grades were what they were prioritizing, it does seem to vary year to year what they look for (just comparing people I grew up with and who was accepted vs denied). There’s been years where I know some who academically were just very average at best but they were accepted while they had peers their age with straight A’s and a high ACT score and didn’t get in.

Oops, wonder if they regret that large donation to the private school.....should have saved it to ensure their kids acceptance at BYU.Cali15 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 21, 2020 2:14 amBYU is pretty competitive, but one of the main reasons for that is that the majority of their applicants are white middle class Mormons from big families who attend church, often all do the same extracurricular activities, have hours of volunteer work, attend seminary, Eagle Scout, planning on going on a mission etc. It’s just really hard to stand out. Why was no one wearing masks when shopping in the latest vlog? The only time they were wearing them was in Lululemon and they were leaving their nose exposed as well. You need to have your nose covered when wearing a mask or it won't help. Of as soon as they left the store they weren't wearing masks. I'm sure they wouldn't take chad shopping to get clothes like they did with the other girls and they would make him buy clothes with what very little money he has.

Ugh Rubys irresponsibility in regards to covid is really starting to get on my nerves. Vlog after vlog, I only see her and her kids wearing masks while in some select stores, and then taking them off immediately after. And I'm guessing it's only because those stores require you to wear one inside. And along with that, I keep seeing in multiple vlogs that some of her kids are wearing them upside down. At the very least, she should educate herself and her children about how to correctly wear a mask.
I honestly think covid has really highlighted how narcissistic and self centred she is. The lack of masks really shows how little she cares for others and how little respect she has for those around her. Wearing a mask is not just about protecting yourself but also about protecting others. Retail employees and other essential workers unfortunately don't have a choice about whether they are at work or not, but Ruby does have a choice about whether she wants to go shopping or not. She should at the minimum have enough respect for them to wear a mask around them, to keep them safe and healthy.

In my country there’s a Covid crisis, we are (hopefully) at the peak, seeing a lot of new cases breaking record after record.
Masks are mandatory, even for children (excluding babies and special needs of course).
IT is strongly advised that you don’t bring your family when shopping. Only one adult is allowed in the shop per family group and you can bring your children but it’s advised against, so you would bring them if you had no choice.
There are exceptions, like the elderly. They can have another adult with them. But also it’s not advised that they go out and there are volunteers to do the shopping for them.
I don’t know why she doesn’t take this seriously. I get it they are all young and healthy, it probably won’t be worse than the flu for them, chances are none of them will even be hospitalized.
But wearing masks is about protecting others from you and your germs. Other people have conditions that put them at risk. Other people might not be aware of this fact.
She talks to her children about being humble and responsible but shows them no such thing. She is never humble, she is terribly irresponsable and she has no compassion.

Re: 8 Passengers: Emotional Abuse Galore & Making Kids Sleep on The Floor | Part 17
I have to say that Shari really shined in today's vlog. While Ruby was thoroughly annoyed with the little boys rambling on about their stay at grandma's, Shari patiently directed their story to help move them along. Even as others were making fun of them. She made Ruby look like a petulant child and I am here for it.
Also, grandma confirmed my suspicions. Letting the kids watch the banned Simpsons movie was one thing, but letting the little boys watch horror movies confirms it. Rules are ignored at grandma's house because she is supposed to be the fun one. Thankfully most of their rules are totally pointless, and only made because the parents are idiots, but horror movies could have kept grandma up all night with nightmares.
