In a nod to the new title, I can only imagine the back and skeletal pain Ellie will be dealing with by middle age. She’s so lazy and sedentary for a woman not even thirty years old. Her core must be so weak. Her posture is already a mess.

I just noticed their vlog from last week about Happy Anniversary skin cancer check. Ellie did NOT have a cancerous melanoma removed from her back!! That just gets on my nerves every time she brings it up! Since melanoma is the bad skin cancer, or course it sounds more attention grabbing to Ellie instead of a precancer which is what actually happened.

I was wondering what you all were talking about being a minimalist. Wow, one shelf of books and Ellie thinks it's too many. I think Jared's statement "do what you want Ellie-you are going to anyway" when he was trying to object to donating the books was pretty telling! It appears that's what happens with all the decisions in their family.

How on earth is a small bowl of vegetables a decent meal for any of them? It’s just so odd. My kids would be ravenous after that, let alone me and my husband.

It really irritates me that the men in that family are such poor advocates for their children. Kevin is totally checked out, apparently as long as Joel gets his Postmates meal after the kids are put to bed, he doesn't care what they eat, and Jared just eats what Ellie makes and probably hits a drive through later (because he definitely has a dad bod).
#dadgoals: As long as my tummy is full, who cares what my kids eat?

Steamed, mushy veggies with sauce again for dinner tonight. Do they EVER eat a real meal????? Like it this her fucked up relationship with food and wanting to appear all healthy to viewers, because she’s lazy and that’s probably the easiest thing she can make, or what? Look. I love veggies. But I typically don’t have an entire meal of just veggies. Even when I make a salad (I love salads), there is some kind of protein on it. Every time she makes that veggie thing though it all looks super mushy and soggy. I just can’t imagine the kids liking or being satisfied with it. Let alone Jared...a grown man!

She eats like a baby because emotionally she is still an infant. She would probably drink out of a bottle if she could get away with it. We've all heard Jared complain when she makes blue box mac n cheese because she adds so much milk it's basically liquidy cheese-soup with noodles. She just says "Tough! That's how I make it!" No, they rarely EVER eat a normal meal, I mean mill, unless Jared makes it. She restricts food and distorts it/lessens the nutritional content of it because she is projecting her own issues about food onto her family. If EVERyONE is eating that crap then she doesn't look like the odd one.

I don't watch these girls anymore. I've lost interest. I'd rather watch Grandma Griff clean up after her kitchen disaster (what a mess! I had no idea that smoke could do so much damage!) and watch to see what she picks out to replace that pink carpet and outdated furniture. I don't like Jennifer but at least I learn things like helpful ways to keep the house clean and organization tips, as well as some cooking ideas. Much more entertaining and worth my time.

This is an interesting point. My guess is that dating in the Mormon bubble, especially 10-20 years ago, it was not particularly hard to find a husband who bought into this idea of separate spheres for men and women, with women occupying the domestic space and making all decisions related to child rearing. I remember Bonnie sharing that she actually made more money than Joel prior to becoming a mother, but once she was pregnant she let Joel know she had no intention of working and he was going to have to figure it out.

The truly ironic thing is that all of them ended up monetizing this domesticity at the expense of their children's privacy. Ruby's husband is the only one who kept an outside job. The other ironic thing to me is that despite retaining control over the family decisions, Ellie is more often than not checked out and either leaving her kids to fend for themselves or leaning on Jared as the primary caregiver when it comes to the day to day grind of taking care of kids. All if her sisters would fancy themselves stay-at-home moms because they like the prestige their church attaches to that label, and it makes them more appealing to their core audience, but clearly they aren't fulfilled in that role, because they wouldn't be broadcasting it to make a buck if they were focused on their families and children.
