Katie said that if Brooks was born now through VBAC, it should be a pretty easy delivery since he is kind of small. I thought all deliveries were painful, regardless of the baby's weight. I've never had a baby, so I don't know. Can someone clear this up?

In my experience of having late 8&9lbers and a 35 week 5lb 15oz baby the contractions were just as painful, more so if anything with my preemie as she became distressed and they wouldn't let me have any pain relief as it was making her heart rate worse. However pushing them out wise my preemie was definitely less painful than my late babies!

Oh my gosh that video is the sweetest thing ever, her smile when Cullen hugged her after was so cute! She's wicked smart. Their faces were hilarious listening to her count!

Not surprising though, Katie knows enough about kids and has worked with enough of them to know that is seriously impressive. She is obviously very bright, and has good teachers in her family. It is pretty common to get kids starting school having a lot of trouble counting in sequence, especially when moving past 10. I hope they have a school near them that does a mixed kindergarten/grade 1 class cause if things continue like this Gaines will be pretty advanced going into school

That video of her counting literally had my jaw on the floor! I always see people commenting on how advanced she is, and I of course see that she is very smart. But her speech isn't quite where my daughter's was at that age, so it never seemed that impressive to me. But my kid definitely could not count to 13 by that age! It took her until 2.5 to figure out counting passed 10!

All 3 of my boys were NICU babies only one was a preemie 36 weeker 10 days in NICU, preemies are amazing fighters but I have seen many preemies not need NICU time at all

Why do they have the baby bed and the baby shirt in the room with Katie? Is it just in case she delivers early?

Just taking the younger viewers into account as well when I delivered my 36 weeker, my eldest I was 19 and so naive I didnt for a minute think there would be anything wrong or any consequence to him being early I just thought well he is choosing to come so everything must be fine and nothing was explained to me until afterwards so I can understand why they would think it would all be roses and sunshine

Pretty much. Cullen said the nurses brought the stuff in and set it all up just in case the magnesium and everything didn't help and Brooks was born while they were there.

I think it was good for Gaines to see where her brother will be and the room (or type of room) he will be born in. Her face was so cute in today's video. I think she expected to walk into the room and see Katie holding a baby. She looked like she was looking around for him before Katie said he was still in her belly.

I agree. My youngest son is 2 in September and his speech is better than Gaines but he can only count to 3 by himself...very occasionally he will count up to 5. No way could he could he count up to 13 yet!

Has he ever had any lasting difficulties? My youngest was 35 weeks, she took a little while learning to feed early on and has had bad reflux issues, she meets her milestones for her corrected age rather than her actual age so other than that so far so good with her.

Apart from him being adhd which they did warn us about when he was born, he met his milestones all perfectly if not early in some case like talking, he started crawling at 5 months, started speaking at 8 month already and was walking fully by 13 months, he was a colic baby and was lactose intolerant but otherwise my most healthy child, I didn't know about corrected ages with him at all I just let him be and went on as per normal I didn't know any better the only thing I will say was somewhat behind was handwritting etc now but my other son is just as bad and he was not prem he just rushes everything =) otherwise he did and has done very well, preemies are wonderful fighters

Whoa! I've got the biggest grin on my face right now after watching Gaines count to 13! It seems that she may have been able to go further but for the expressions on her parents' faces. She's going to be an over-achiever just like her momma. I think that is why Katie is having difficulty with bedrest. I was on bedrest with my twins, but it simply wasn't possible to not do anything while having a 6 year old in my care. I think she needs to stay in the hospital so Brooks and Katie can be closely monitored.
PERSONAL:
My eldest, born in 1987, was born from a crazy pregnancy. I was unable to get a positive test until I was told her was 18-19 weeks. I had regular periods, several tests, and an auto accident during that time. It was movement that I detected that encouraged me to take time off of work for that test and subsequent tests to determine whether he was healthy. An elevated AFP level led to an amniocentesis, genetic testing, and two level 2 ultrasounds--the most sophisticated to date. I was given a due date for Thanksgiving both times. My ObGyn told me I was making a "mountain out of a mole hill" when I stated concern over my baby's size in centimeters, 4cm short, not matching the gestational weeks. Lomg story short, I went into labor 4 weeks early and Kaiser Hospital wasn't moved to advise me to come in until my contractions were 3 minutes apart. Within 30 minutes of being placed in a birthing suite and upon the other ObGyn checking me he declared he was holding a foot, had lost the heartbeat, and called a code. Dr pushed foot back up into my uterus, I'd dialated to 4cm with off the chart contractions, and the room filled with staff hustling me to the OR. I was told there was no time for an epidural and would have a general. I can't express the sadness I felt knowing my baby may not be as I was rushed down the hall. But I saw him the next day in NICU, he'd gained 1.5 oz and was a healthy 3.8oz. He smiled at me and I held him, swaddled, no bigger than a football. The placenta was sent to pathology, it has holes from the auto accident. I was told he had to get out to be nourished. After a Dubowitz Test a few days later, it was determined he was full term. The whole time, it turns out, I was correct about how far along I was. He was a gifted child with remarkable verbal skills. He just walked at UCSD for his BS in Physiology and Neuroscience. I couldn't be more proud of him. My twins, also a high risk oregnancy and 4 weeks early, also walked. My son for a BA in Accounting and my daughter for a BS in Human Services. Both will attend Graduate School to earn their Masters this Fall while currently holding good jobs in their profession.

I'm willing to bet Katie will go for a third child if she is allowed to do so. As a child psychologist, she is going to want to observe the phenomenom of Birth Order first hand.

MG is so smart. I remember they pulled out flash cards a while ago and they said they hadn't used them since she was 6 months of something crazy lol and she knew all of the words. I am honestly starting to think she could be gifted and be mensa material in the future lol she just picks things up so quickly

She was saying "hi" "hey" "roll tide" when she was freaking 12 months lol my LO is 12 months right now and only says dada, uh oh, and cat. Only Occasionally mama lol

I read recently that magnesium sulfate isn't generally accepted as an anti-contraction medication anymore as of about 10 years ago. Researchers realized the evidence didn't support it. It's still used to reduce the chance of complications in pre-term birth. But it doesn't stop contractions and it sounds like the side effects are quite unpleasant. It's possible her doctor believes he/she has seen enough anecdotal evidence to believe it works. But the meta-analysis says otherwise.

I wonder if Cullen understands. He tweeted "Got fluids, a steroid shot, antibiotics, magnesium sulfate, and pain meds....but contractions still 5 minutes apart." It sounds like those treatments are to reduce complications in case of preterm delivery, not to stop contractions? I'm not sure there is much they can do at this point but keep her in the hospital and keep her on bed rest. How awful, I can't imagine being stuck in bed for four weeks.

Another commenter mentioned that her doctor put her on progesterone during her second pregnancy as a given because she had her first on the early side. It sounds like Katie was experiencing the early signs of labor at least two days before they realized what was going on. In hindsight, they're probably kicking themselves for not coming in sooner. And the doctor's office should have been more concerned with the sudden pain she was having in her joints. I know she said that she didn't want to call the office because she didn't want to have to go in, probably thinking it was nothing, so maybe the doctor wasn't informed.

I took care of a mom a few weeks ago who was in the ICU for other health issues, and I gave her magnesium and turbutaline to stop contractions. Same stuff I was given nearly 20 years ago.
