Re: Steps to Wander
WTH??!! They are going to Idaho to pick up their stuff, but not over the holidays?? Are they on their own in PDX for the holidays?? Making the families come visit them...again?
They are being sort of crazy trying to rush this move through really bad winter weather - there's chances of snow for the rest of the week and that's rare for PDX. Driving to Boise (and back) will be even worse. The main highway, I-84, closes ALL THE TIME for wintery conditions and then they could be stuck.
They just get themselves into really irresponsible situations. Oh well, I guess it's good clickbait "OUR BABY ALMOST DIED IN AN ICE STORM" material.

Honestly, if I were in their situation, I'd drop a couple $100s at IKEA for a temporary bed (or air mattress) and a few essentials and WAIT until the drive isn't so dangerous.ewokfan11 wrote:WTH??!! Re: Steps to Wander
I was really curious about the price they listed the van for, but couldn't find the Craigslist ad. Either they didn't list it under the year, make or model of the van or they took down the listing once it sold. I even just did the basic search words to go by the picture and nothing.

Re: Steps to Wander
And given their track record with severe weather (the thunderstorms while they were on the trip ) you would think they would want to sit it out at least for this week. If they are going home for Xmas that would be the smartest thing to do, just pack up then! Maybe they feel a rush to get sorta settled before the holidays? That would be the last thing i would want to do...ewokfan11 wrote:WTH??!! They are going to Idaho to pick up their stuff, but not over the holidays?? Are they on their own in PDX for the holidays?? Am I the only one who rolls their eyes at everything that comes out of their mouths lately? I really did enjoy them up until the moment Kelsey became pregnant. They are SO over the top dramatic about literally everything. They got swindled on Ebay "It really hurt us and negatively effected our lives" then in the next breath that Ebay was refunding their money. How exactly did it REALLY hurt you? I get that it was probably annoying and inconvenient but sheesh.
Kelsey's thing with the freaking gestational diabetes test was SO over the top. I actually can't wait to see her in labor. She seems to have a freak out about literally everything medical.
And then of course the running. My god Corbin acts like Kelsey is the only pregnant woman who has ever ran more than a mile.

Yep, I think some of it is theatrics for the vlog, and some of it is they're just really immature and don't know how to plan and problem solve like adults. Basic adult responsibilities and unpleasantness seems to baffle them, so they regularly find themselves in stressful situations with no self-awareness for how their own decisions led them there.Pency wrote:Am I the only one who rolls their eyes at everything that comes out of their mouths lately? I'm still rolling my eyes over the fact that they made financial decisions based on the highest bid when they didn't have the money yet. And then he blamed eBay, even though their fee was refunded. Corbin wasn't upset that eBay was cumbersome, because the process offers plenty of protections and they didn't have to pay their fee, he was pissed because they weren't getting the $10k windfall that he thought he was entitled to.

Re: Steps to Wander
I think I wrote that. When they were asking for Patreon $$ during the trip I happened to check out their page. They were getting a little over $1000/month (it was something like $1,080/month) according to the page, but there were only about 7-ish monthly donors - B&M were listed as one. The other six were very small donors (like in the $10 or less category). I just did the math and figured B&M were sending the big chunk of that monthly income. I should have taken a screen shot because their Patreon page is inactive now.Ryder wrote:Going back a few pages sorry .... how do we know B&M wear giving them 1k a month ?

Did anyone else notice that the new apartment doesn't even have a door separating the living area and bedroom??!!!??! How the heck is that going to work??! It's already a tiny space and no DOOR???? Is June's "nook" going to be in the closet?? EDIT: Once I found their place, you can see there is a sliding "barn" style door between the bedroom and living room. Not sure if that's going to buffer the noise, light, etc. But better than nothing.
Also, they TOTALLY gave away where they are living in the vlog. With their floor plan, it looks like they are paying about $1400 a month!! YIKES!

Re: Steps to Wander
I live in an on campus apartment (which is basically a dorm with a kitchen... The bare minimum to be considered a bedroom etc), and I think our apartment is better than theirs. For one... It's cheaper (never thought I would say that about campus housing). We have bedrooms for a second. And third we have a kitchen area as opposed to a line of cabinets with a sink and stove. Like I get minimalist, but how do they expect to live with a baby in there. And what about when juniper gets bigger. She is only going to fit in a nook for so long. Babies grow out of that tiny stage so fast. I don't understand why they didn't think about moving to the suburbs or out of Portland. I don't get the obsession with the city. There are cool restaurants everywhere (and cool bars and coffee shops). They make me stressed with how little thought they are putting into how this baby will change their life.

Re: Steps to Wander
And aren't eBay listing fees like $13? Oh, boy, he got it refunded. What a fighter. They were just pissed that it being the One and Only Wander Wagon didn't get them $10K, and subscribers aren't flocking to them.HashtagBlessed wrote:Yep, I think some of it is theatrics for the vlog, and some of it is they're just really immature and don't know how to plan and problem solve like adults. Re: Steps to Wander
I know nothing about Portland's rental market, but $1400 a month is pretty cheap where I'm from. That's what my husband and I paid for our second studio apartment in the suburbs outside of DC. We first got our place when I was in college and we didn't leave until recently because the rent was so cheap for the area considering it was new construction with high end finishes for a rental. I could be wrong, but $1400 a month can't be for an apartment in the city, right? Maybe Portland is more affordable than I thought, but I think they're probably on the outskirts of the city for that price.
They have to know that it's a temporary solution, because they can't put their child in a nook of their bedroom for very long unless they plan to never have privacy again and never speak above a whisper during nap time or bed time. So the fact that they want to paint walls is ridiculous- they have to paint over everything and return the walls to their original state before they move out or forfeit their security deposit. How long do they think they can live in that kind of set-up without a second bedroom? They kept saying this was the biggest apartment they've ever lived in, and I agree it's totally doable for two adults in the city. But they've never had a baby before and they don't seem to appreciate that babies have stuff and take up space.

Re: Steps to Wander
Portland is significantly cheaper than DC, so $1400 for a one bedroom is probably a high-average price these days. They are still "in the city" technically, but not as close in as I think they wanted to be. They are on a bus route, but not even close to the MAX train or the streetcar. They are close to restaurants, cafes...but the closest Safeway (grocery store) and Walgreens (pharmacy) are about a mile+ away. Not sure how easy that's going to be without a car.HashtagBlessed wrote:I could be wrong, but $1400 a month can't be for an apartment in the city, right? Their place is in an up-and-coming trendy area that's perfect for young singles, but young parents with a newborn and no car???

Re: Steps to Wander
Thanks for the info! I've always lived in the DC area, so outrageous real estate prices are my norm. I know that couples in DC, New York, San Francisco, etc. make due with one bedroom apartments with baby because the market for two bedrooms is so steep. I've seen people put cribs in the master or convert walk-in closets or dinning areas into nurseries. But in a more affordable city like Portland, I can't imagine this is the norm. It's not even a large one bedroom. There's barely enough room for a queen bed and two nightstands. I imagine it's 600 sq/ft and some change.ewokfan11 wrote:Portland is significantly cheaper than DC, so $1400 for a one bedroom is probably a high-average price these days. Re: Steps to Wander
The floor plan I saw that looks exactly like their place is 633 sq. ft. TINY!! Also, from the website, the rate for that apartment is $1645 - but the one similar listed on Craigslist was $1400. Both rates seem high to me for that tiny place in SE Portland.HashtagBlessed wrote:I imagine it's 600 sq/ft and some change.

Re: Steps to Wander
I will say that would be a pretty cool space for a young couple. The galley kitchen, while not ideal for cooking, at least allows for a larger dinning table than most small apartments (assuming you don't need a mobile kitchen island) and there's room for a small sofa or love seat and an accent chair in the living area. The barn door is neat too. At least they have the alcove in the bedroom and an alcove in the kitchen that they could probably tuck a mini crib into. I would tuck the mini crib in the closet between the bedroom and bathroom and make the alcove in the kitchen a changing area with storage for baby items. $1645 sounds more realistic to me. The Craig's List listing is probably a bait and switch for another unit. Leasing companies tend to do that. I think it's nice to be near bars and restaurants, but I question how often they'll utilize that on a tight budget with a baby in tow. I see they have a Safeway that's 15 minutes away, so that's definitely a plus.ewokfan11 wrote:The floor plan I saw that looks exactly like their place is 633 sq. ft. TINY!! I do question how long they can live with a baby in a space that small and what their monthly budget really looks like if they had to scrutinize the numbers that carefully before they knew if they could afford it, and then sacrifice the car. I'm all for living in small spaces if it means you can put away a lot into savings every month, we did this for a few years after graduation, but I suspect they're pushing their limit with that payment and they're probably going to be living YouTube paycheck to YouTube paycheck.

Re: Steps to Wander
I'm a NW Portland girl - born and raised - then ditched the rain for sunnier weather! That SE Hawthorne Safeway is basically drug-deal/homeless central - and they have to take the bus there?? Not to seem snobby, but they moved to an area I would NEVER even consider living in. Trendy doesn't mean safe.HashtagBlessed wrote:I see they have a Safeway that's 15 minutes away, so that's definitely a plus.
Re: Steps to Wander
I just watched the "Selling Our Van" video. Corbin comes across as both incredibly entitled and naive during his rant. Like Pency, I used to enjoy their videos too until Kelsey became pregnant, but I've pretty much stopped watching now.

Re: Steps to Wander
Yikes! If they don't have a decent grocery store/pharmacy/general store within walking distance, then I wouldn't consider it all that walkable. I suppose they can order groceries, but they'll be paying a fee and a mark-up. I understand that the closer you are to a city, the higher your crime rate is and that's just a fact. We have a higher crime rate living in Alexandria than we would in Fairfax. But I wouldn't be comfortable moving my family to a neighborhood where there are reports of shots fired on a regular basis.

Re: Steps to Wander
For me the issue isn't so much that they're living in a one bedroom apartment for the next year. Parents want to live in high cost of living areas like New York, San Francisco, etc. with housing shortages and these parents will convert closets and dining areas into nurseries. But Kelsey and Corbin don't work in Portland, and Portland is not New York or San Francisco. They aren't even on a career path that would allow them to afford a two bedroom apartment in a year or two. They're having a child without a stable income. Neither one of them have a job with benefits, and I highly doubt they have a sizable nest egg or rainy day fund. Their monthly views and subscriber rates are dropping, and only seem to spike momentarily if there's a Daily Bumps cross-over or a baby milestone. They're planning on making a living exploiting their child on YouTube. These are the same people who decided to start trying to get pregnant with no prenatal coverage right before they embarked on a sixth month road trip, and then continued that trip after they found out they were expecting for another five months while living in a van. It's just one bone headed decision after another, so they don't inspire a lot of confidence.
