Additionally, you need to teach your kids to respect a dog's boundaries—it doesn't matter how well-trained a dog is, if a kid is playing with a dog's mouth or putting their hands in the dog food, dogs will sometimes bite as a warning to give them some space. Children should never get in any dog's space like that, because they aren't old enough to understand a dog's signals.Playsinrain wrote:I 100% agree with you on this one, every dog needs a space that belongs just to them that they can go too alone, when they are feeling overwhelmed. that space should be kid free and should "belong" to the dog. A dog's crate is his space. A dog should be trained to not react should their space be invaded, that space should be theirs to escape to. No child needs to enter their den.... ever. It's an accident waiting to happen. I don't remember who it is, but there's an trainer on these boards and perhaps they can weigh in. But my trainer definitely believes a dog has their own space.Theirmom wrote:

But I certainly teach my kids that most people don't train their dogs to our standards, and to avoid dogs until they know their level of training.

I agree with your other points, but will agree to disagree on this one.

I don't agree with that. We have 2 dogs. 1 dog is a 5 lb toy breed and the other is my husbands cop k9 German Shepard. It is very very important to teach kids of all ages that they need to respect a dog's space. we have friends who have children and they come over to our home. When they do we crate the German Shepard but our other dog runs around. It's his house. The kids will get in his face and he will tolerate them for a while. After that he will show his teeth. If I tell kids to get out of his face or to give him space and they don't listen and get nipped at that's their fault , not my dogs. Dogs need space and kids need to respect itTheirmom wrote:HelloSweetie wrote:Yes you need to get your dogs used to someone near their food when eating, but you should also teach children to respect their space. This wasn't them working with the dogs. This was not supervising the kids!
What happens when they go to someone else's house and try to mess with an "untrained" dog's bowl?
No. I will never teach my kids to respect a dogs space. Because a dog doesn't own space.
But I certainly teach my kids that most people don't train their dogs to our standards, and to avoid dogs until they know their level of training.
The bumps are not good dog owners or trainers. They weren't supervising the interaction at all. If there are no injuries, it will be pure dumb luck.
They're not even doing the leash training properly. It's common advice to keep a puppy leashed or crated unless fully supervised. That doesn't mean putting a leash on and letting her run with it. It means the dog is attached to the trainer at all times. It's incredibly annoying, because they're taking very good tactics, using them incorrectly, and giving those methods a bad name.
Usually I just find their antics obnoxious. But dog training is something I take very seriously, and the lackadaisical approach they're taking is pissing me off. Their young audience is going to think this is an okay way to train a dog. It's aggravating.

Re: DailyHomeImprovements: Part #81
This mindset is so beyond dangerous. As soon as a dog "owns" his space, he feels entitled to protect it. A good owner makes their dog feel safe. Dogs who have to retreat, or take over because they don't feel their owners can handle being the pack leader and protector are NOT SAFE DOGS.Playsinrain wrote:

(This is what worries me about Luna and Karma. The Bumps aren't good leaders/protectors, and now the two dogs can be a "pack" together, with their own hierarchy)
The crate should be a warm and inviting space for the dog to relax in. Not an escape plan. And the dog should NEVER consider it "theirs". Just like their toys, food and treats, their bed is something the pack leader lets them use. It's not theirs to defend. The owner protects it for them. It's communal property that the dog doesn't mind sharing.
I'm not advocating for dogs to be under constant bombardment of rambunctious children. And I know it sounds like splitting hairs. All living things need quiet time. All dogs should have a safe den. But making sure a dog stays 100% submissive to humans and smaller animals (especially a dog that will be 65lbs+) means that you make it very clear that they own nothing. Not even their den. They use it because you let them, not because it's theirs.

If you have a dog that snarls and shows it's teeth, it's not a well trained dog. And you're not doing your job as an owner and making it feel safe. A dog who is completely confident in its pack leader doesn't feel the need to make a show of dominance like that.coriann1911 wrote: I don't agree with that. And if your dog ever nips a kid, it's ALWAYS your fault. It should never get that far.
I'm actually appalled at your post.

He's a 5 lb dog who came from a puppy mill. If a child shows aggression towards my dog his showing his teeth is a warning , animals of every kind have warnings.Theirmom wrote:If you have a dog that snarls and shows it's teeth, it's not a well trained dog. And I'm saying if you let a situation get to the warning stage, it's gone too far. Your dog should have complete confidence in you to protect it. He should never HAVE to warn someone away. That includes removing it from situations that trigger a defensive response.coriann1911 wrote:He's a 5 lb dog who came from a puppy mill. Our German Shepard owns this space and protects our home, thats part of hid training. If someone was to break into our home, they wouldn't walk out. A dog owner should always set their dog up for success. They should be the dogs advocate. They should look for calming signals from the dog. The DBs were not watching for anything.

Sorry that my SS of Ollie and Finn messing around with the dog bowl caused a 15+ comment discussion on dog training! My bad!
On another note, anyone care to guess what #couplegoals Bryan and Missy are going for Valentines Day? I'm guessing that Bryan got Missy several boxes of candy, had a few dozen roses delivered, and is taking her out to dinner at a sushi place where she will pick over the rice. Missy will mumble, "Love you," very quietly, and play on her phone while enduring a boring session of Valentines Day sex.

Re: DailyHomeImprovements: Part #81
The video montage at IHOP is super necessary - because nobody knows that they eat eggs and pancakes for breakfast...like ever!! Okay so listening to Missy command Luna...I know this sounds creepy...but I can totally see her speaking to Bryan like that...EWWWW...just thinking about it disgusts me!! Does Karma get attention? I had no idea, you know since Missy said it like 50 times in the vlog today - would be nice if they showed it 50 times though!!
Missy making those fatty donut rings, it was nice to see Bryan have a normal reaction for once!! I thought he was going to bow down to her or something....so Finn just randomly showed up...do they not keep him there the whole time they are out? It's super creepy - like if something ever happens to this kid they will never even know unless they monitor him all the time!! Okay I think they had enough sweets for one day - it's so gross like calm down with the sugar! Ollie explaining the lego he was playing with was cringe worthy - he will not make any friends once he starts school because they will have no idea what he's saying! His only "obligation friend" will be Pey!
Re: DailyHomeImprovements: Part #81
My baby used to crack up at some of the older videos where Karma would run up trees or play volley ball with balloons. She hasn't so much as shown the slightest interest in the new puppy.sparklyfluff wrote:We totally give Karma loads of attention you guys, we just don't vlog it because he's not as cute That bit wasn't for us was it? Re: DailyHomeImprovements: Part #81
The next thread should be DailyDiabetes. Good lord they eat ridiculous amounts of sweets. The breakfast was all carbs and sugar, then the doughnuts, then the cupcake. It's crazy. And this is nothing against those with diabetes, I know many people who live healthy lifestyles end up with it, I'm currently in my third pregnancy with gestational diabetes, since I'm genetically predisposed. That's part of what annoys me about their diet. They are asking for something that's totally avoidable in their case.

I wonder what B&M gave each other as gifts. Since they already have so much, it must be hard to shop for one another. Especially Missy... she doesn't seem impressed with anything!
