It seems to me they just have realized how to manipulate Ruby -- don't give her any vlog content. What makes a better vlog, everybody sitting around the house or sledding montages? But Shari being involved was a little weird since she didn't have her phone taken away, so maybe it was all a ploy.

I really thought deep down they were on strike due to chores.

Why didn't she take Shari's phone.

Today's vlog:
Grandma: what do you like best about mom and dad?
Julie: I like that when we ask to go play with friends you (Ruby) ask us to do ONE chore before.

What parent asks their kids to do chores before they go play with friends? Is it to teach them that being able to play with friends is a privilege and reward?
I get a parent who asks their child to do something they were supposed to do and didn't before they go. But to ask them just for the reason that they're going out to play?

I heard because Shari the oldest showed all the others how to do all kinds of stuff with their iPods (which can do everything that a phone does except make calls) and Ruby didn't give them permission to use the devices that way, she mentioned they broke the rules. Now she has 4 kids in one house all with their own devices and they're probably getting into inappropriate stuff. Shari set up the devices and I doubt Ruby even had a chance to put parental controls on them.

Pretty revealing vlog.

When grandma asked if Kevin and Ruby ever fight Julie's face was pretty telling.

Also, they said how they don't believe there is only one person you are compatible with, which I agree, but they said they don't believe in "chemistry" and they only believe in promising to serve each-other= kinda how the church tells you to do.

They plan to move in a new house and not every child will have their own bedroom.

All Ruby said was they misused their iPods. Chad had signed a "contract" with Ruby and Kevin detailing the rules of using his iPod, but Abby and Julie hadn't yet signed it. I have no clue what they did with the iPods that wass so bad. But they just got the iPods taken away for a few days. It wasn't even a case of them being grounded in the traditional sense.

I still think the strike was a planned performance, at least on Ruby and Shari's part. The kids were filming in the room, Ruby also filmed herself calling Kevin. Everything was filmed for the vlog - and if the kids were supposedly denying her good sledding footage, then giving her strike footage from their side (in the bedroom) was certainly counterproductive. The strike was a significant "plot" of that day's vlog and filled up several minutes of that day's video with footage from the "kidses" perspective and Ruby's too.

I am cracking up over that pirate ship themed room. I don't think Ruby knows what "financially independent"" means. She just said, "we're still not financially independent." Are they both accepting money from their parents still? I assumed they were paying their own bills and supporting their own kids.

She'll be "only" 35 on 18th of January.
Married at 18... If I were to be in Ruby's shoes I was supposed to have Shari and Chad already?! I AM STILL A KID I CAN'T HAVE KIDS OF MY OWN!

That strike, and pretty much everything she vlogs now, seems staged or exploited.

I think she confused being financially independent with independently wealthy?

I can relate to her about marrying/having children young. I had my first kid in my early twenties and we weren't exactly well-off. I couldn't imagine having kids in my thirties or older! By the time I'm 45, I'll have one kid out of college and the other halfway through. Sweet freedom!

Kevin and Ruby have more getaways than any married couple I know. They're always eager to dump the kids on various family members. I don't even think they like each other much.

Well, the Mormon church does help families. I am still not entirely sure what constitutes to a "family in need" in the church (as members of the church are required to pay tithing and encouraged to donate - which I believe is used to purchase and distribute items to families - please correct me if I am wrong) but I would assume that's what she was referring to?
I actually just googled it and technically it means your personal assets (dividends) generate an income greater than your expenses so you don't have to actively work for a living and can essentially retire. But I don't think that's the way it's commonly used and I don't think that's what the person writing the comment meant either, because most people can't wait until they no longer have to work for a living before starting a family.

It was funny when their grandma asked if their parents fight and julie actually said no.. they showed in the VLOG yesterday that they were mad at each other over pretty silly stuff.. (ruby was mad that kevin spent money on sleds, kevin was mad that ruby almost broke the brand new camera) lol

Yeah, when Ruby says "financially independent," she means being set for life without having to depend on earned income (or unreliable income like YouTube).

What I think of as "financially independent" would be debts paid, home and cars paid off, and the ability to lead a reasonable life without depending on a job (which in modern times aren't very secure). Some people can achieve this, and they may not necessarily be wealthy... But for many (including me), it is a pipe dream.

I wonder if Kevin wants to retire. It would be nice to have a cushion, but I would never give up a career as a (tenured?) professor in my field of interest, even if I didn't need the money.

Kevin is about 39 and is just getting or very close to tenure. I hope he doesn't do something insane like quit his job for youtube. That'll be a huge mistake.

Oh and I think he definitely got the tenure otherwise wouldn't he be fired by now or at least extremely stressed out?

His university page still says Assistant Professor https://ceen.et.byu.edu/content/kevin-w-franke, however the description of the video of him in Italy it says "BYU civil engineering professor Kevin Franke..." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tecc_N9hDk.

In the description it also says: "Kevin Franke (and his wife, Ruby) are also known for their popular videos and blogs about family life and adventures raising six children: youtube.com/8passengers".
WTF, why would the BYU's YT channel mention their vlog channel? It becomes more and more obvious that LDS controls everything and sees vlogs as a way to preach mormonism.

If Shari's parents don't give her a reality check now, she'll definitely get one from her peers when she starts high school. Especially if she continues with the nastiness in ghe vlogs.

Can't stand people that chew with their mouth open.
And then Ruby vlogs 5 cm from her face, chewing her gum and talking to the camera.
For such a "perfect" family, basic manners are nowhere to be found.
