Cullen and Katie: Shifty eyes and constant lies | Part #25
Re: Cullen and Katie: Shifty eyes and constant lies | Part #25
OMG. Their latest video with "tips" for frugal habits. Are you kidding me? THEY are giving advice on how to be frugal??? They are total and complete Morons. The part when they say they didn't realize that leaving every light on in the house, plus kids white noise machines, and cranking the AC, all day long was adding up to such high electricity bill. My 5 year old knows to shut the goddamn lights off behind him - because we have TAUGHT him that it matters. Katie is so goddamn privileged and spoiled and it's passing right down to her kids. Children are what you guide/shape them to be. Explain things to them, and model the behavior. it's not rocket science!!
Cullen's demeanor has completely changed since the start of this Debt series. You can tell he realizes the full extent of this disaster. He is totally crapping his pants in fear because he knows they are not getting out of this, and all the while he's sitting there next to her and she's still blabbering on and on with excuses. At LEAST he realizes how dumb they were. It's actually making me sad to watch this guy fully realize how screwed he is.

I love how their advice is scrape the very end of the shampoo and conditioner, keep the lights off, use ziplock packs instead of individually packed snacks, etc. Sorry, but those bottles you can get for a few dollars and lights are common sense. These changes are not going to save you. You know what will, selling your second car, getting a second job. I dont care if youtube pays more, you can easily do youtube and another job. They make it seem like 19 year olds in college learning how to deal with money for the first time. I know the whole get another job has been spoken to death but for real, a second job can be used just for debt and really help and it doesnt matter what it is, 8/hr is still 8 dollars more an hour than they have now.

Re: Cullen and Katie: Shifty eyes and constant lies | Part #25
I had to LOL when they were whining the temp inside the house was up to a whopping 78 degrees when their A/C unit went out. Are they joking? I typically keep my thermostat around 75-76 and I live in Florida. After Hurricane Irma, when we didn't have power for a week, the inside temps were 90+. Yes, THAT was dreadful.
Give me a break. Keeping a 5,000 square foot house at 65 degrees in the summer in Alabama is complete BS. Keep the lights off, keep the doors closed, don't cook inside (although that's probably not a problem they have) and GET some room fans from Amazon. This isn't hard...and they are BOTH native Alabamians. SMH!
As someone else mentioned, they act as if they are 19 and have never dealt with money or finances before. I'm also starting to think Katie was hiding a lot of this "debt disaster" from Cullen. She keeps changing #s in the videos, so who knows what she was really telling Cullen.

We keep out thermostat in the low sixties in _winter_, and around 74-75 in summer and we live in inland San Diego.
They are truly ridiculous. Can't make any real sacrifices and want the debt to magically go away, and for them to get lots of views...

Yeah our AC went out a few years ago and we had to wait until payday to get it fixed which meant several days of it being 90+ in our house. I wanted to be really mature and comment "Cry me river, build me a bridge, and get the hell over it!" They seem to have no clue how dumb and whiny and entitled that made them look or maybe they do and they just don't care...rosie_dalia wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2020 9:02 pm I had to LOL when they were whining the temp inside the house was up to a whopping 78 degrees when their A/C unit went out. I get that anything below 60 probably seems cold to people in Alabama but I question why they have their heat on so often.
It cannot possibly be that cold there, I love in northeast ohio and when the temp is between 40-50 we keep our heat set at 65.
I am really just laughing at their oh woah as me mentality they have right now. Yes, Cullen intelligent home buyers worry about the cost of utilities in such a large home.
They act like the viewers should feel bad that they were so stupid and made all the choices they made.
I hope Katie was serious and they do call Dave Ramsey because I have a feeling he will be very blunt with them about their budget. They only got current because they sold the golf cart, her parents had that savings account and selling a few other things. None of that was from cutting from their budget.

Re: Cullen and Katie: Shifty eyes and constant lies | Part #25
They keep their ac at 62 in the summer?!?!? Why? I get it is hot down there but that is extreme it gets up in the high 80s to 90 here in ohio and we keep our ac at 70. I cannot even imagine the power bill in that house. Why are the kids not turning off the white noise machines? My kids are 2 and 4 and know to turn off their noise machines in the morning. They give these kids money for chores but have not even taught them basic life skills.
I cannot even with Katie comparing herself to minimalists families. I live very minimally and am very intentional with what I buy and bring into my home. Going to the dollar tree and buying cheap junk from china that will end up in a landfill is not a minimalist behavior!
Omg they think that buying off brand food is living below their means?!? No, living within or below your means is taking your kids out of the expensive daycare. Selling your second car! They are so oblivious I just can't!

The most efficient setting for your ac is 78* and for your heater it is 68 or less.

Katie uses three knifes to make one sandwich because she forgot where she put the first and second knife and Cullen finds himself living in Katie's universe but deep down he's still a thrifting boy.

These two are just odd. Cullen wanted to be the next Shay and stalked him. He didn't want to be the "thrifting boy." And Katie, well, she's just a clueless princess learning to live on a beer budget.lovingthisforum wrote: ↑Fri Feb 28, 2020 7:57 am Katie uses three knifes to make one sandwich because she forgot where she put the first and second knife and Cullen finds himself living in Katie's universe but deep down he's still a thrifting boy.

Yep! When we ran into money troubles, we set our ac at 78/79 instead of 69/70. I’m in south Florida where it gets HOT but guess what? Being uncomfortable was more important than not being able to pay bills. We saved an average of $60 a month. It’s an immediate savings that goes a long way.Ducklings4 wrote:The most efficient setting for your ac is 78* and for your heater it is 68 or less.
They need to stop trying to be “comfortable” and start being realistic or they will never get out of this hole. It’s frustrating to watch them because they aren’t taking this seriously.
Cullen seems to have a lot to say but Katie always has a response that justifies her actions and spending and you can tell it’s wearing on him. The relationship between them seems very unhealthy. With Katie in charge of the numbers and money, she will keep justifying expenses that aren’t necessary.
She needs to stop separating herself as “the nerd” and work together with Cullen. I think Cullen knows one of them needs to get a job outside the home. There is absolutely no need for both of them to be home. They are in a financial crisis! Think about your children and get a job that pays a steady income!!!
He also needs to step up and make his voice known and not be shut down by her justifications. They are both responsible for getting themselves in this situation. They have absolutely no plan as of now, at least not one that I can see. What a mess.

The key to comfort with heating and cooling is the humidity. We run humidifiers in the winter and keep the AC around 70° in the summer. Dry heat is more comfortable than humid heat in the summer. I hand wash dishes in the summer and make sure to run the vent fan during showers. We grill rather than use the stove as much as possible.

I keep a timed fan on only but most nights we would have some type of window open (Ohio as well), even last year with the 100 degree heat wave we tried not to use our ACBoymomma123 wrote:They keep their ac at 62 in the summer?!?!? Holy smokes you keep your AC set at 70? We keep ours set at 78 during the day and 74 at night in the Summer here in NJ and our Electric Bill is still nearly $200 a month. In the winter our electric bill is $120 a month. Our heat is gas, but our water heater is unfortunately electric.Boymomma123 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 28, 2020 5:20 am They keep their ac at 62 in the summer?!?!? Why? Oops. I meant 80° but we run our ceiling fans, so it hardly ever gets above 78°in the summer.

My husband prefers it at 71/72 when it gets super humid and in the 90s. I grew up in a family that never used our air conditioning so I am comfortable with the windows open and ceiling fans. We don't consistently keep in that low just when it is super hot. But we also have a 1500 sq ft home so it doesn't up our electric bill too much. Average is probably 74 for us in the summer and I am in the paying off debt journey so I have been keeping my heat at 68 to cut the gas bill.PirateWench8 wrote:Holy smokes you keep your AC set at 70? I just don't understand why trying to save on the gas, electric and water bills wouldn't have been one of the first things they tried to cut?
I think it is 25 degrees out right now and my thermostat is at 67 and we are just fine. They think they need the heat on when it is 50 out lol!

Yeah it gets beyond 35*C and grossly humid here in Queensland, Australia and we dont turn on the Air Con unless its more than 35 outside. My kids school thankfully has AC so that's not an issue unless its raining and humid as on the weekend or during holidays. C&K need to learn to be uncomfortable and be okay with that, not dwell on it for the sake of bills, showing kids its OK to be a little physically uncomfortable and still have fun. We turn the AC on at night, dont get me wrong, the humidity itself makes it miserable to sleep IMO. yuck. lol I didnt grow up here so, Im still getting used to it. Also majority of Aussies dont use dryers because the electricity prices are absolutely insane.

How do you spend thousands of dollars on clothes in one month plus almost $700 in purchases from target in one month.
I would not even spend that much to replace entire wardrobes for my family of 4. I just cannot even understand why someone would feel the need to spend so much money!
She cannot even blame Cullen for any of this debt.

Did y'all check out Gaines's dress for the Daddy Daughter Dance? Instead of encouraging her to wear a simple dress, she looks like she's auditioning for the kiddie version of Frozen and the Tiara is a nice touch and rainbow ballet slippers ..with a fur shawl ..meanwhile Daddy looks like a schlub compared to his overdressed daughter

Now we know how they ran up $100K in debt in just a year or two. Seriously, she spent $2700 on cheap Kohls clothes.
I will say that at least with the "look back" to last year they are seeing what they spent and why they are in debt. They aren't doing the same crazy spending this year mostly because they don't have the money but maybe the insight will at least prevent this crazy spending in the future. I don't see them getting a lot of debt paid off this year unless something major happens (sell the house and suburban AND get an outside job) but at least they aren't adding more debt. A small step in the right direction.
