Re: Cullen and Katie: Brooks Baby Part 5
Terbutaline is a smooth muscle relaxer and I've heard it does wonders for stopping preterm labor. it's branded name is Brethine and Katie mentioned it in the hospital as something they may try. But in the last vlog she didn't mention she had been given any. I wonder if they will give it to her now? Is there a downside to taking it?

Re: Cullen and Katie: Brooks Baby Part 5
It makes you feel like a jittery mess. It used to be given for asthma breathing treatments. It's an old school med. I don't work with OB patients often, so I am not an expert on the latest drug therapies. I can only speak to what I gave my recent OB patient to stop her contractions.
To be honest, after having severe pregnancy complications and a very bad outcome, I find it very stressful to work with a sick mommy. Especially, as was the last case, where you have three patients, but can only physically see one of them.

If Missy was going through what Katie is, we would be seeing random cryptic tweets, and montage after montage of the pain and suffering. It would be close ups of the monitor, the IV bag, Misery wincing, and the helicopter Hollisters.
I give Cullen so many props for handling this tastefully, and placing Katie and Brook's well being over click bait for cash.

Re: Cullen and Katie: Brooks Baby Part 5
I wish they hadn't let Gaines play in it with her shoes on. The nurses are going to have to clean it and replace the linens. Not sure why they had it in there. I think they had the warmer in there too, just in case.fossilfinger wrote:Why do they have the baby bed and the baby shirt in the room with Katie? Is it just in case she delivers early?
I think Katie was getting as annoyed as I was with Cullen flickering the lights, lol. She kept telling him to stop, and he was trying to get her to rap. She just had this look like "I am trying to be a good sport, but I feel like crap" I hope he brought her food from the barbecue.

Re: Cullen and Katie: Brooks Baby Part 5
The US is an anomaly for still using magnesium sulfate as a first line tocolytic drug despite the lack of clinical data on it's efficacy.
Even though it's not FDA approved for treating preterm labor, the FDA and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists still sanction it for short-term use (up to 48 hours) between 24 and 34 weeks to allow for the administration of steroids to improve lung function. But it's an off-label use and doctors do not understand exactly how magnesium sulfate would stop contractions. The original evidence used to support it's use was laboratory, not clinical. It's not expected to do much of anything past 48 hours, and studies over the last 10 years are claiming it isn't even effective during that 48 time span. I think it's likely that, for most women, preterm labor stops on its own, but I think patients in that situation are scared and desperate for a miracle drug. Magnesium sulfate has been so widely used since the 1960s that it just keeps getting used despite the evidence that it's not effective for that particular use. I would hope there are better tocolytic drugs out there that she's being offered, like terbutaline.
I can't edit my post above to include sources, but in case anyone is interested:

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1 ... 2/abstract
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1 ... 0592.x/pdf
The meta-analysis was conducted by the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group and looked at 37 trials for a total of 3,571 pregnant women who went into labor prior to 37 weeks. The study found that women who were given magnesium sulfate were no less likely to deliver their babies within 48 hours than women who did not get the drug. Along with the Cochrane study, other reviews and metaanalyses in the United States, Canada and Britain have all failed to report any evidence of tocolytic efficacy for magnesium sulfate.

Re: Cullen and Katie: Brooks Baby Part 5
I haven't seen today's vlog so feel free to correct me but we haven't seen any of the Grandparents at the hospital, right? That seems weird to me. I saw Katie post on IG about Grandolly's birthday and not being able to see her. Is there a reason they can't / haven't visited?

Re: Cullen and Katie: Brooks Baby Part 5
Well, it seems to me Katie is in the middle of something right now and could possibly be having a baby. It really isn't a good time to have company I would imagine. She has her husband with her to help her at this time. She is 33 and doesn't see her mother on a daily basis as it is. Maybe I'm missing something? But if she's up to seeing anyone,it would likely be Gaines. I apologize if I sound snappy, but I am highly anxious about all of this. Can someone tell me anything about those strange awful pains she was having? Any idea what it was and/or if it could be problematic for the baby? It seems to me it is difficult to know whether Brooks should be in or out without understanding what those pains were all about.

Has Cullen lost weight? His face looks slimmer to me (*cough*and he looks hot*cough*).
Re: Cullen and Katie: Brooks Baby Part 5
So they have to stay another night!
How long will the try to stop labour? Is there a point when you're close enough to full term and they let you go early?

Re: Cullen and Katie: Brooks Baby Part 5
The joint pain was likely a sign of early labor when the muscles and joints are stretching and shifting in preparation for birth. It's also believed that hormones called prostaglandins are released in the body to prepare the uterus for contracting just prior to labor. Prostaglandins are also involved in headaches and the pain associated with joint injuries and arthritis. (Pain relievers block the production of prostaglandins in the body.) Some prostaglandins work to induce labor by breaking down the connective tissue in the cervix and some make the uterine cells more sensitive to oxytocin, a hormone released by the brain to induce labor. This all isn't supposed to happen until the baby is done gestating. But I think it's likely the sudden joint pain was a reaction to the release of prostaglandins in her body, which for whatever reason happened prematurely. It's amazing, but there is still a lot the medical field doesn't know about what is going on chemically within the body when it comes to pregnancy and labor. Hormones are mysterious sometimes.

A lot of people are complaining about the title of the vlog. It's kinda annoying especially with the ending clip of yesterday's vlog.

It is pretty click-baity. And we had just been saying how classy they were being. Oh, Cullen, you had to succumb to the lure of clickbait.Lovethesnark wrote:A lot of people are complaining about the title of the vlog. It's kinda annoying especially with the ending clip of yesterday's vlog.
And naww, he's not losing weight. It's just the angle. When he was clicking the light off and on, you can see he still has that dad gut. He needs to be careful. Abdominal fat like his is the most dangerous kind. I'm not talking about looks-- this is about his health.

Re: Cullen and Katie: Brooks Baby Part 5
I thought the title with the thumbnail was kind of clever. And it does seem as though his face has thinnedout, I noticed it back when he took a picture with a sign in Florida. It's only natural to pick up a few pounds when there's a baby coming. I gained 8 lbs when my best friend was pregnant! Lol, I was pretty pissed about it actually. But it does come off, in theory.lmmomSD wrote:It is pretty click-baity. And we had just been saying how classy they were being. Sorry, don't see it. You guys can have him. I'll take Joel. Joel has actually gotten cuter the longer I have watched those vlogs.
You can really see his gut when he's coaching their niece at Grandolly's pool.

Cullen not realizing MG needed pants with that "dress" actually made me lol. Can't say I blame the guy. Being in the hospital for that long.
Also MG counting was the cutest thing ever. My favorite thing about children is we forget how much they pay attention and then they surprise us with things they've learned.

Re: Cullen and Katie: Brooks Baby Part 5
I've watched MG count at least 20 tines and I still grin ear to ear. The look on her face and raised voice gets me when she slams her doll down on 5. She knew she nailed it! To please her mom straightened up and counted again. That had to be the best medicine right there. She is really a sweet little girl.
Re: Cullen and Katie: Brooks Baby Part 5
I don't think the tittle was completely a click bait. They did have a surprise delivery, and if you follow them on IG or Twitter you'd see that they received flowers.
