I have a shih tzu and she is the sweetest dog, ever. She loves kids. To be fair, she was hand raised by my sister and her family until she was 9 weeks old, but we saw her all the time from the day she was born. I do know hand raised dogs are different from the dogs at puppy mills. All 4 dogs from the same litter are sweet as can be and are great family dogs. They are a pain in the ass to potty train though (the breed as a whole).Missy1393 wrote:I think you just got lucky with your dogs. Jack Russell's and Shih Tzus are notorious for snapping at young children... they're generally not recommended for families along with Australian Shepards.MommaLindsey2 wrote:Yes my whole life before I had kids I always wanted an Australian shepherd or border collie. Since I'm grown now and have a toddler and 3 year old that isn't realistic. Those breeds just aren't good with children. Over the years I have always rescued dogs and have ended up with a variety. We have 4 dogs that are all members of the family and amazing with my kids. There are so many breeds you can find that make good family dogs! I have a golden retriever mix, jack Russell terrier, Chinese crested powderpuff, and Shih Tzu.tintin15 wrote:They really shouldn't have gotten an Australian Shepherd. Obviously, any dogs can be good with kids if you put in the effort, but lazy people should not have gotten a hyper herding dog. Of course Ollie is going to be afraid of her.
They should have gotten a golden retriever or a Labrador. Although, I think Ollie would be more comfortable with a smaller dog like a bulldog or a pug. They got Luna "for" the kids, right? They should have put more thought into it than, "Australian Shepherds are so pretty and our fave!!!!".
It is so sad that missy got Luna and they are now ignoring her. In her mind though karma is an Australian shepherd mix (I would be willing to bet money that there is no Australian shepherd in him at all). She wanted a dog that would be a good dog just like karma. All dogs are different though.

But I agree you have to research dog breeds and it looks like they didn't do that. I can't imagine locking my dog up like that! My sweet baby sleeps with us every night, and if I leave I put a baby gate up in the kitchen so she has the whole kitchen and breakfast nook to wander around in. If I am home she has free reign in the house. She is a member of our family. How these ppl treat animals as disposable and an inconvenience is so gross to me.
