If my kids were sent home from school for being tired and having a headache they would not be going to a baseball game that night. Maybe my priorities are messed up. But if you were too sick for school you were too sick for everything.

Re: Julie Deru: Part One
They didn't get babysitter and didn't want to miss the game. So they dragged her with them. I don't know if she truly was sick or not, but I think the point is that they just didn't want to cancel fun-time because of her. (Maybe she wasn't that sick after-all...)Ducklings4 wrote:If my kids were sent home from school for being tired and having a headache they would not be going to a baseball game that night. Re: Julie Deru: Part One
Sorry then one of them should have stayed home with her. I missed things when my children were “sick.” It’s what you do. If I left work because I was “sick” and then my boss saw me at a baseball game I know I would be in trouble. School should be important to these people, but it’s not except for Landon because he will go for forever.Kataja wrote:They didn't get babysitter and didn't want to miss the game. Re: Julie Deru: Part One
Did they not work with Cooper on his letters before starting Kindergarten?
Maybe it was just me but I didn't think Julie laughing about what Emma did was the right move. She's getting on to her about while at the same time laughing-gives a mixed message to me. Then she tells her that she had done the same thing with her mom.

Re: Julie Deru: Part One
I think the biggest thing they worked on with Cooper was his speech. Sometimes it's hard to teach certain kids things at home. My oldest didn't grasp the alphabet until she was in kindergarten. It wasn't that I didn't try.sheltiefan wrote:Did they not work with Cooper on his letters before starting Kindergarten?

And I dont think Emma still understands about forging a signature. In her head it was suppose to get signed by her and Julie, she forgot it, so signed it for both of them the next day. It's not like she's had failed tests sent home for a signature. Emma probably didn't understand what Julie was talking about when recalling her past.

It’s happening. The change. Julie intastory. Today I realize we don’t just put family videos up on YouTube, we are influencers according to so many of you today.
Soon she will be like Bonnie and tell us her you know what don’t stink.

I agree. I don't watch Julie all the time on vlogs, but do on Instagram. I see her more and more acting like her sister!Ducklings4 wrote:It’s happening. The change. Julie intastory. Today I realize we don’t just put family videos up on YouTube, we are influencers according to so many of you today.

Re: Julie Deru: Part One
They aren't influencing a whole lot of folks-the views for the week total was 114,000.
I still don't understand how they can be full time vloggers with their view and subscribers count so low! They only have 188,000 subscribers. If I remember correctly, Ruby's husband still has a job outside of youtube and they have 1.8 million subscibers!

I really believe (speculate) that the mormon church supports them as well. Maybe they see it as a ministry to reach the world of some sort. There are a LOT of highly successful mormons on YouTube and their channels aren't that great at all. I think they encourage all the members to subscribe and support them as well.

Re: Julie Deru: Part One
I know for youtube-world that is not much, but Imagine that 114 000 people a WEEK would hear what you said! That is A LOT. I think Ruby's husband works still outside of Youtube because he has a solid career. I think Joel and Jared did not have careers. They had jobs but nothing long-term or career-oriented. Ruby's husband has a goal in his mind and he is working towards it. He would not feel mentally satisfied staying at home all day. (I'm not saying that Jared or Joel do, but they don't have anything more meaningful to do.) I think Ruby is ''winning'' because her husband is not involved too much in vlogging and therefore they are able to stay bit more ''relatable'' and grounded than her sisters who have stay at home partners and keep whining how hard is life...sheltiefan wrote:They aren't influencing a whole lot of folks-the views for the week total was 114,000.

Re: Julie Deru: Part One
I imagine most of those viewers are repeat viewers. Probably shouldn't have made the comment so I apologize. Julie is my favorite vlogger of the Griffin sisters, but I'm afraid the more she is around them or at conference deals like this, she is going to become more like them.Kataja wrote:I know for youtube-world that is not much, but Imagine that 114 000 people a WEEK would hear what you said! The main thing I don't understand is neither one working a regular job with six mouths to feed and a small amount of subscribers and views. But really I didn't realize till I found Ellie and Jared that people would be totally supported by youtube. The ones I watch are not daily vloggers and have outside careers!

Re: Julie Deru: Part One
So is the teacher's assistant a paid position?
Also didn't he get a position with his church that wasn't paid but was going to be kind of time consuming too? I will say Julie does have a lot on her plate with the kids and vlog. Only thing is she already has a delay like her sisters and now will be even further behind. Looks like that would hinder her if she is wanting to grow her vlog more.

Re: Julie Deru: Part One
Landon does actually not have a job in the traditional sense. He is a first-year PhD student. Generally, that means that the university has granted him a funding package which includes tuition fee waiver and health insurance. Some lucky PhD students also get a scholarship for living expenses, which is not the case for Landon. It is more common for the university to guarantee that you can work a teaching or research assistant job during the semester and earn money with that. In no universe does that support a family of six though (think 20,000 a year or less). I would know first hand and I only have to support myself.sheltiefan wrote:So is the teacher's assistant a paid position?

Re: Julie Deru: Part One
It also really irritated me when Julie said that they will be pursuing the "professor thing because that has been working out great for Ruby and Kevin".
Seriously! WTF! Here is the deal: Kevin made tenure which is very much the exception to the rule. 9 out of 10 (at least!) will experience something like this: 5-6 years of PhD thesis research/writing (only 3 of them funded though..duh!), a post-doc position good knows where with really low wages and a 1 year contract every time. Most people can't get out of the post-doc stage and have a hard time finding a job outside of academia bc in their mid 30s they are still newbies to business and industry which makes them relatively unattractive to employers. Oh then there is the tenure track option: You can apply to a tenure track position, which means that you get a 6 year contract. During that time you have to give your very best so at the end the university might give you a fixed position as full professor. About 20% actually succeed. The rest? Well, congrats! You may apply to industry and business positions and compete with young professionals (except that you are in your 40s)

Re: Julie Deru: Part One
I hope that makes it understandable as to why everyone who is in academia would consider it kind of irresponsible-- given that they depend on that income at the rate they are procreating...Sue_Sceptic wrote:It also really irritated me when Julie said that they will be pursuing the "professor thing because that has been working out great for Ruby and Kevin".

Re: Julie Deru: Part One
I feel sorry for Julie and the kids I'd guess they're always worrying about money. I dont watch anymore but i remember the talk of budgets. Landon had 4 kids early in life when he probably shouldnt have but he did and now please put your big boy boots on and provide for your family in a meaningful way. You need a proper job mate.

Re: Julie Deru: Part One
I guess she and Ruby realize how ridiculous their eyebrows look. Will they fade. Julie’s hair is so bleached that hers really look ridiculous. With Ruby’s hair down hers aren’t as bad. So that was the conference over a week ago? Is there a 10 day lag between filming and uploading?

Re: Julie Deru: Part One
I remember when Julie was talking about moving to Utah and she said something along the lines of - we can play with our family, and go on ATV trips, and getaways, etc. I totally interpreted that as - if we stay in Missouri we will be poor and not have any toys but if we move to Utah we can jump onto our family’s meal ticket. So far, she’s accomplishing that goal. I think Landon is just grasping for straws with the whole academia track. Kevin has the goal of PhD and professor career from early on and at 40 he accomplished that goal. Landon is starting late and doesn’t seem to have the same sort of focused drive.

Re: Julie Deru: Part One
I only started watching the Deru crew in the last few months and I have posted before not understanding the financial situation with them. They are doing all these activities and I'm like how are the affording all that with neither one working a full time job and their channel doesn't have that many subscribers. Take for instance all the baby stuff-went back and watched the vlog where Ruby bought a lot of the stuff so that got explained. From what I have read here, Landon needs to grow up and decide what career path he is going to take and stick with it. He has a family to provide for!Manitowoc123 wrote:I remember when Julie was talking about moving to Utah and she said something along the lines of - we can play with our family, and go on ATV trips, and getaways, etc. I totally interpreted that as - if we stay in Missouri we will be poor and not have any toys but if we move to Utah we can jump onto our family’s meal ticket.
