No Cooper was locked in the closet and Porter missed out on Disney.

This is what I've been wondering! I kind of assumed the reason they seem to live pretty normally is that they were largely living off student loans, which in some circumstances can be pretty sizeable. I really don't know what loans you can get if you are receiving a TA salary though. But as soon as Landon's is no longer a student, he has to pay those back. So even if he can work as a TA again this semester, if he's not enrolled he is going to have to start paying back allll the loans from med school and his MBA, not to mention anything from year at BYU. It seems like right now would be crunch time, but nope.

Landon and Julie don't work, hardly vlog, must have mounds of debt, and yet have more children than the average family. Julie buys her kids clothes at boutiques sometimes. It just doesn't add up. I don't understand how this isn't a dire financial situation, but it seems like it must not be since both of them have viable degrees to get jobs and they aren't doing that. And even if they are able to make enough to live on from their social media (she does do quite a few IG ads) then they are just lazy. They have 4 kids. They need a Lot of money. Why not work at least part time, still do the IG ads, and save up for a house or for the kids college.... I can't figure out what I could be missing... I'm just baffled.

I'm baffled too and I would be surprised if his parents financed his entire time in college meaning he probably has student loans...but I could be wrong. Again, he said to BYU he could pay his own tuition for the grad program. My understanding is student loans are very difficult not to pay back and lenders can garnish you salary. Could he have received grants?

The vlog today wasn't a clickbait with their diving experience because there were boat problems and they had to wait to be found/picked up after their first dive. Also they were experiencing high waves (10 and 12 foot swells Landon stated), had to descend quickly and you can see they were concerned about waiting for the boat even in a group. It seems like on a higher risk activity because while they're certified scuba divers, they don't seem to have a lot of experience. I could find one other vlog where they dived in Mexico where Julie said she had only been scuba diving one time prior to this. It's an expensive activity so this maybe why they don't dive often. I had a neighbor die due to a dive accident I believe from decompression sickness and the problem is if you run into medical problems, you're not close to immediate treatment. I don't know if I would go out for a second or third dive after the boat incident and I wonder when the operators who were responsible for this dive group would notify authorities when they had problems finding them after the first dive. I am not a diver, just did a little reading about this activity.

What in the He!! Lucy on a bike ride with mom and dad, why does she not have a helmet on especially going at the speed they show. Geez, I had turned to Julie and Landon being the more sensible, attentive parents--no more!!!

Did they ever discuss their son's obvious speech problem? I can't understand a word he says.

Do you all see Julie's IG story where Landon had Lucy sitting in his lap while driving? I guess none of these Griffith sisters believe in safety? They also had Lucy on the bed and the other kids jumped on the bed and makes bounce up. Thankfully when it bounced her off it was just a slide off and Landon was there to help her down where she didn't get hurt!

It is so stupid to do so. Most of the accidents happen near your home anyways! No matter how short the ride and how slow you drive, you don't live in a vacuum. Other people drive roads too and do not know that you have your baby out of the designated seat!

Not only it was stupid to do but oh so stupid to share! Are they idiots or what? (and I thought Julie was the smart one of the family....) Do they think it makes them look cool? It just makes all the other reasonable parents think that they are cray-cray.

If that airbag deployed the baby would be decapitated. I find it disturbing that people don’t realize that and drive with small dogs on their laps. We had to install a rule at the preschool that no kids were in the front seat in the car line. Then we had a fender bender in the car and an airbag deployed. That is when the parents got it.

What is with these people and allowing their children to be unbuckled in a moving car?! I will never understand how they continuously do this. And the baby in the damn driver's seat! The airbag goes off and she is dead. They should be reported for that, full stop.
It's like they have some belief that tragedy won't strike them or something. Like, they're exempt from normal safety rules that protect your kids! It's bullshit and I judge the hell out of them for it. It actually angers me- the sheer strength of their ignorance and naivete!
Buckle your kids, every time! Most accidents happen close to home!
I can honestly that my kids have never ridden unbuckled or not in a car seat, ever! It is something I absolutely do not compromise. These dopes think that accidents don't happen on quaint streets or 5 minutes from home.
And Julie is a former nurse? Pathetic!

Two educated parents, one who promoted health/health science, the other who was in healthcare, don't seem to understand safety standards for children. Landon's expert anatomy knowledge should be able to tell him what area of his daughter's body would be impacted if he crashes when she sits on his lap in the front seat of a car.
Julie has not tried to pivot away from her children being in their vlog like Bonnie has and she said how the CVX Live party was an acknowledge of her children's part in their YouTube business (paraphrasing this sentence). I question how they can survive without YouTube if the changes in January affects their channel.

Julie Deru: Part One

Julie talked about being busy when your husband is in graduate school (insta stories). This seems a little misleading since he isn’t in a grad program. How do they afford babysitters on Landon’s salary and a low viewed YouTube channel.

I hadn't realized they had cut back (vlogging) to two days a week (IG message below from a few days ago). I'd say it looks pretty certain she isn't going to work as a nurse either in order to provide income and benefits for the family. Also, Landon is listed as Grad Asst - Research Cont. I don't believe this position has benefits and this job doesn't have a great salary that would be needed to support a family of six?

However, I put work aside to focus on being a mom and it felt so good! So good, in fact, that @landon_deru and I decided to make more time for parenting in our lives. To give us time and energy to succeed at our most important roles as parents, we have decided to post two vlogs a week for a while instead of three. We love and appreciate each of you and we are excited to continue sharing our lives with you!

So much just doesn't add up about them financially. I'm starting to wonder if they are working for 8 passengers. Do you think Landen could be editing the 8 passengers vlogs or something?

I don't know, but it is possible. I didn't realize Kevin has looked for an online vlog editor before. Again, I doubt this is a high paying position with benefits.

My name is Kevin Franke, and I’m a faculty in the civil engineering department. I am also the co-creator of a popular YouTube family vlog called “8 Passengers”. My wife Ruby is the main creator and video editor for our channel (ie., the boss). Our channel is about 2 years old, but already has nearly 540,000 subscribers. We are currently growing our subscribers by about 40k to 100k per month, and anticipate hitting 1 million subscribers by the end of this year.

Between my faculty job, our YouTube channel, church callings, and our six young kids, life has become very busy. We are looking for a talented student video editor that could work for us to develop 1-2 videos for our channel each week. This could be a great opportunity for a student to get his/her work in front of millions of eyeballs, and create a reputation among an influential community of YouTubers.

Of course they would try to get students to work for them. I wonder if it's even a paid position or just an "internship" type deal. College kids do a lot in exchange for experience.

I don’t think unpaid internships are even legal anymore unless for very specific jobs “civic, charitable, or humanitarian reasons.” Although I wouldn’t be surprised with the amount that YTers seem to get away with.

I just don't understand how this family makes it financially!! I hardly ever watch their vlogs so I didn't realize they had cut back once again. Good grief, they have to be super behind if they have so few vlogs. What is weird is the sibling that has the fewest subscribers and views is the one with the fewest vlogs per week. I follow her in IG too but somehow missed the announcement!

I thought it was pure irony that Julie had an IG story with Lucy in Landon's lap then does the jacket promotion made for children in car seats!

I know! When she started talking about car seat safety I thought she was going to address the whole Lucy in the driver's seat incident. But no. She's all the sudden talking about safety because a brand sent her winter jackets.
